Guild of Ephemeral Scribes
MS 1780.11 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Guild of Ephemeral Scribes is a sub-order within the Scribes' Guild responsible for the curation, documentation, and eventual dissolution of holdings designated as ephemeral. Its primary jurisdiction is the production and authentication of Lysander Parch, a substrate whose physical and temporal instability is a foundational requirement for the recording of non-durable knowledge. According to Concordance 117, Clause 8, “That which is not destined for the permanent stacks must be inscribed with impermanent tools upon impermanent media by hands trained in impermanence.”
History and Formation
The Guild traces its formal establishment to Amendment Delta of the Third Concordance (circa Floor 1,342), which separated the duties of temporary record-keeping from those of the Guild of Dormant Scribes. The latter had previously maintained protocols for “sleeping records,” but the proliferation of provisional hypotheses, speculative taxonomies, and self-negating theorems in the Middle Reaches necessitated a dedicated body. The inaugural Master Ephemeral was appointed following the Resolution of the Miletus Fragment Petition, a case which established that a document could be considered authentically ephemeral even if its constituent materials were, individually, durable.
Early chapters of the Guild were located adjacent to the Bureau of Ephemeral Holdings on Floors 899–903, though their administrative center has since migrated to the Spiral Aperture complex on Floor 7,412. This relocation is cited in the Guild’s charter as a symbolic alignment with the “higher-order transience” associated with prime-numbered floors.
Core Functions and Protocols
The Guild’s operations are defined by the Cycle of Dissolution, a seven-stage process outlined in Annex Σ of Concordance 451.
- Appraisal & Designation: A holding is reviewed by a panel of three Ephemeral Scribes for its “inherent temporal fragility.” Accepted items are stamped with the Guild’s sigil—an hourglass whose sand forms a question mark.
- Substrate Preparation: The exclusive use of Lysander Parch, manufactured to precise specifications of acidity and fiber instability.
- Inscription: Employing fugitive inks whose chemical decay is calibrated to the projected “life-span” of the information, as categorized in the Ephemeral Audit tables.
- Authentication: The application of a wax seal mixed with powdered moth-wing, which crumbles upon the first physical handling after the designated expiry.
- Interim Cataloguing: Entry into the Registrum Praeteritus, a ledger that records only the title, floor of origin, and dissolution date of ephemeral holdings.
- Quarantine Period: The holding is stored in a climate-controlled alcove where ambient humidity accelerates the planned degradation.
- Dissolution & Verification: On the ordained date, a Scribe witnesses the material’s final state—typically complete illegibility or structural collapse—and certifies the dissolution in the master log.
Notably, the Guild of Indexers maintains a separate, permanent record of the fact of these dissolutions, creating a paradoxical meta-archive of absence.
Notable Ephemeral Holdings
While the contents of dissolved holdings are, by design, lost, their titles and dissolution dates are a matter of public record. Notable examples include:
- An Argument for a Thirteen-Month Calendar, Based on the Breathing Patterns of the Central Ventilation Shafts (Dissolved Floor 4,221, Year of the Silent Bell).
- Interim Index to Hypothetical Bestiaries, Vol. VII (Dissolved upon completion of the permanent index, as per Conclave Directive 55b).
- The complete working notes for the Treatise on the Acoustic Properties of Unbuilt Stairwells, dissolved immediately upon the Treatise’s publication to prevent scholarly dispute.
Governance and Disputes
The Guild is overseen by a rotating Ephemeral Conclave, which answers to the broader Scribes' Guild. Its authority is frequently contested by the Guild of Scribes and Formalists, who argue that the very act of certifying dissolution creates a permanent bureaucratic fact, thus negating the Guild’s purpose. This philosophical dispute is central to the ongoing case In Re: The Persistence of the Dissolution Seal before the Librarians’ arbitration panel.
Furthermore, the Guild of Vertical Scribes has occasionally accused the Ephemerals of “premature dissolution,” particularly regarding provisional maps of shaftways that later proved to have enduring utility. These conflicts are typically resolved by reference to contradictory Concordances, most often Concordance 117 (pro-ephemerality) versus Concordance 208, Clause 3 (which privileges “utility in ascent and descent above all temporary considerations”).
Relationship with Other Bodies
The Guild maintains a necessarily close but often fraught relationship with the Bureau of Ephemeral Holdings, which is responsible for the physical storage prior to dissolution. It also supplies degraded Lysander Parch samples to the Guild of Dormant Scribes for their research into archival senescence. A minor but persistent rivalry exists with the Scribes of the Erroneous Premise, as both groups handle concepts of impermanence and error, though the Ephemerals focus on material decay while the Scribes of the Erroneous Premise concern themselves with logical invalidity.
Scholarly Criticism
The dominant criticism of the Guild’s work, articulated in the Scroll of Persistent Questions (Floor 10,055), is that it creates a “taxonomy of oblivion” that is, itself, permanent. By so meticulously defining and governing the process of disappearance, the Guild ensures that the idea of the ephemeral becomes one of the Tower’s most durable and referenced concepts. The standard Guild rebuttal, as noted in their internal handbook, is that this critique “mistakes the cataloguing of a shadow for the preservation of the object that cast it.”
