Lysander Parch

MS 0962.99 · Objects and instruments

Lysander Parch is a rare, semi-translucent writing medium produced from the processed hide of The Lysander Beetle, found exclusively in the fungal groves of Sub-level 71-A. Its most notable characteristic is its capacity for temporary inscription, as any markings made upon it fade completely within 72 hours of application, leaving behind a chemically sensitized surface primed for re-use. Governed by Concordance 417, Annex C: On Ephemera, its production, trade, and ceremonial use are strictly controlled by the Guild of Ephemeral Scribes.

Physical Properties and Manufacture

Raw Lysander Parch possesses a faint blue-grey hue and a texture likened to fine suede. The manufacturing process, as codified in the Manual of Ephemeral Arts, involves a seven-stage treatment with alkaline solutions derived from Vat-moss and Sorrow-lichen, culminating in a final rinse in the aerated waters of the Font of Forgetting on Spiral 9. This treatment imbues the parchment with its unique molecular instability. A finished sheet measures precisely 33 by 48 centimeters, the standard size known as a "Lysander Quire." The material is highly resistant to permanent inks, dyes, and scorching; attempts to create lasting marks result in immediate and violent degradation of the sheet into a viscous, odorless slurry.

Primary Applications

The primary sanctioned use of Lysander Parch is for the recording of Provisional Verdicts during Librarian tribunals. All arguments, evidence, and preliminary judgments are recorded on the parch, forming a complete but transient legal record. The fading of the text symbolizes the court's capacity to re-evaluate matters with a blank slate in subsequent sessions. It is also the required medium for drafting amendments to the Concordances before they are committed to Vellum of Permanence, and for the transmission of certain classes of Disavowed Messages between administrative wings.

Unauthorized uses, while punishable under Concordance 892, are documented in disciplinary ledgers. These include attempted personal diaries, illicit gambling tallies, and, in one notorious case, the drafting of a speculative genealogy linking several Senior Librarians to a colony of Carpet-newts.

The Lysander Beetle and Ecological Concerns

The sole source of the material, the Lysander Beetle, is a flightless, bioluminescent insect that feeds on the Ghost-cap mushroom. Each beetle yields only a few square centimeters of usable hide, requiring the harvest of approximately 250 specimens for a single Quire. This intensive harvesting led to a population crisis in 712 A.T. (Archive Time), prompting the declaration of The Damp Vaults as a Preserved Biosphere under Concordance 560. Current regulations, enforced by the Wardens of the Vaults, mandate a rotational culling schedule and the maintenance of fungal nurseries to ensure beetle sustainability. Scholarly debate persists on whether the beetle was named for the parch or the parch for the beetle; the earliest mention in the Annals of the Lower Stacks references "the lysandrian hide," predating the documented existence of the scholar Lysander.

Controversy and the 'Permanent Fade'

A significant doctrinal controversy surrounds a batch of parch produced in 899 A.T., which failed to reset after its 72-hour cycle, leaving the final inscriptions permanently—if faintly—visible. This event, termed the Permanent Fade, was investigated by a special committee. One faction, led by Archivist Bexley, argued it was a simple manufacturing error involving contaminated Vat-moss. Another, led by Scribe-Captain Aris, contended it represented a metaphysical flaw—a "leak of permanence into the ephemeral field"—and demanded the entire batch be sealed in the Vault of Un-Truths. The matter was settled by a novel reading of Annex C, clause 14, which states "that which ceases to be ephemeral ceases to be governed by this annex." The parch was subsequently reclassified as defective vellum and pulped for filler material.

Ceremonial and Symbolic Role

Beyond its administrative functions, Lysander Parch plays a key symbolic role in Tower rituals. During the Rite of Seasonal Revision, junior librarians inscribe their perceived errors of the past quarter on sheets of parch, which are then ritually dissolved in the Font of Forgetting. Furthermore, a blank Quire is presented to any newly appointed Curator as a reminder of the impermanence of all initial cataloguing systems. The Guild of Ephemeral Scribes uses a special, thicker-grade parch for its membership rolls, requiring a continuous, cyclical re-inscription of every name to maintain the guild's official roster.
