Ghost-cap mushroom
MS 8496.45 · Objects and instruments
The Ghost-cap mushroom (Phantasma fungorum) is a bioluminescent, non-photosynthetic fungus catalogued under Phyto-Chimeric Anomalies (Subheading 7.C: Luminous Flora & Fauna). It is the exclusive nutritional substrate for the Lysander Beetle and is the primary agent responsible for the beetle's characteristic phosphorescence.
Physical Characteristics & Habitat
The fruiting body of P. fungorum is a translucent, pale grey cap measuring 2–4 cm in diameter, supported by a slender, fibrous stipe of 3–5 cm. Its most notable feature is a soft, pulsating bioluminescence, emitting light in the 490–520 nm wavelength (perceived as a pale green). This luminescence follows a circadian rhythm, peaking during the Tower's designated "quiescence period" and dimming to near-invisibility during active archival hours. The mushroom lacks true gills; instead, spore dispersal occurs via the passive shedding of microscopic, luminescent particulates from the cap's underside.
Ghost-caps are not cultivated but are documented as spontaneously occurring in high-humidity, low-illumination environments where decaying Lysander Parch is present. Primary colonies are maintained within the The Damp Vaults on Spire 404, though wild specimens are reportedly observed in the interstitial spaces of older, parchment-dense shelves, particularly near the West Stairwell (Spiral 9).
Symbiotic Relationship with the Lysander Beetle
The Ghost-cap mushroom and the Lysander Beetle (Chrysomelida lysandrae) exist in a symbiotic cycle. The beetle's digestive system metabolizes the mushroom's unique photogenic compounds, which are then sequestered in specialized abdominal sacs, producing the beetle's glow. In turn, the beetle's waste products, along with fragments of the parchment it consumes, provide the requisite substrate for fungal growth. This cycle is formally recognized in Concordance 3, Annex Delta, as a "Category 1 Mutualistic Absence-Dependency."
Attempts to sustain P. fungorum on alternative substrates, or to maintain Lysander Beetle populations on non-luminous fungi, result in rapid colony collapse and loss of bioluminescence within 72 hours, confirming the relationship's obligate nature.
Role in Parchment Production
The integrity of Lysander Parch, a vital medium for certain classes of archival records, is directly contingent on the beetle's consumption of Ghost-caps. Parchment produced from beetles deprived of the mushroom lacks the characteristic "memory-retentive" quality ascribed to standard-grade Lysander Parch. The Commission for Archival Permanence's 7th Directive explicitly mandates the monitoring of Ghost-cap colonies in all Beetle husbandries, citing the risk of "mnemonic degradation in vital ledgers."
Controversies & Scholarly Dispute
The taxonomic status of Phantasma fungorum is a point of ongoing contention. Proponents of Literary Ghost Theory argue that the mushroom is not a distinct organism but a "luminous byproduct" of the parchment-becycle itself—a physical manifestation of the archival process. They cite the work of Selena Moss, particularly her treatise On Ghost Protocols, which posits that the mushroom's growth patterns mirror "luminous scripts" observed in Ghost Lights.
Conversely, traditional mycologists within the Tower maintain it is a legitimate, if anomalous, fungal species. This group references The Ghost in the Ledger, interpreting its passages on "absent substrates" as supporting a material classification. The dispute is currently adjudicated under Review Protocol 44 of the Third Concordance, with no resolution expected before the next decadal synod.
Handling & Containment Protocols
Due to its delicate structure and light-based life cycle, the Ghost-cap is classified as a "Sensitive Holding, Type B." Standard procedure, as per the Caretaker's Manual (Vol. XII), requires handling under sub-lumen amber filters to prevent photonic shock. Spores are to be contained within double-sealed crystaline phials and stored in the The Ghost Vault when not actively used for beetle sustenance. Unauthorized propagation or removal from designated vaults is a breach of Concordance 3, Clause 19, and is subject to re-shelving penalties.
