Ghost Cap Mushroom Phantasma Fungorum

MS 9938.12 · Objects and instruments

Ghost-cap Mushroom (Phantasma fungorum) is a bioluminescent, non-photosynthetic fungus catalogued under Phyto-Chimeric Anomalies and recognised as the exclusive nutritional substrate of the Lysander Beetle. Its colonies are monitored in all beetle husbandries pursuant to the Commission for Archival Permanence's 7th Directive, and its symbiotic cycle with that insect is formally recognised in Third Concordance, Annex Delta.

Taxonomy and Morphology

The Phantasma fungorum presents a translucent, pale grey cap measuring 2–4 cm in diameter, supported by a slender, fibrous stipe of 3–5 cm. It is classified within Phyto-Chimeric Anomalies on the basis of its non-photosynthetic metabolism and its apparent dependence upon ambient archival humidity rather than soil nutrients. The fungus emits a soft, pulsating bioluminescence in the 490–520 nm wavelength, a property that has historically caused it to be confused with the luminous anomalies catalogued under Ghost Lights, though the Auditory Phantasma Taxonomy distinguishes the two by resonance rather than colour.

First formal description is attributed to Junior Scriptor Halverine of Floor 188, who recorded in the winter of the 4,112th recension that "the cap gives light without heat and feeds the beetle without soil, which we take as sufficient ground for anomaly." Disagreement persists as to whether the species name should be rendered fungorum or fungora; the Ghost Ledger retains the former, while the Literary Ghost Theory school favours the latter on the grounds of a lost marginalia in The Ghost Vault.

Symbiosis with the Lysander Beetle

The Lysander Beetle (Chrysomelida lysandrae) is a flightless, bioluminescent insect that subsists entirely on the Ghost-cap mushroom. The beetle's luminescence is held to be contingent upon continuous consumption of the fungus; withdrawal of the substrate produces a measurable dimming within 11 hours. Third Concordance, Annex Delta, states that "the cycle of cap and beetle shall be maintained without interruption, for the one is the light of the other."

The Commission for Archival Permanence's 7th Directive mandates the monitoring of Ghost-cap colonies in all beetle husbandries, and requires a monthly return to the Scriptoria of Floor 90. A notable failure occurred in the 4,209th recension, when the husbandry of Spiral 4 omitted its return for fourteen months; the resulting enquiry, recorded in Procedural Recitation, concluded only that "the omission was archival rather than biological, and the beetles continued undisturbed."

Conflicts of Concordance

Scholarly dispute surrounds the question of whether the fungus may be cultivated independently of the beetle. The Third Concordance implies necessity of symbiosis, yet the Ghost Node recension of the Second Concordance suggests isolated cultivation is permissible "where the light is banked against winter." The Commission for Archival Permanence has declined to reconcile the two, noting in a sealed marginalia that "contradiction is the condition of the catalogue, not its error."

Clerk Orris of the West Aperture filed a grievance in the 4,230th recension arguing that the Ghost-Flax degradation attributed to Ghost Lights should equally apply to Phantasma fungorum, since both emit in the same band. The The Architectural Ghost Theory office rejected the claim on the basis that "flax fears the wandering light, not the tended one," a ruling later cited without comment in Procedural Leakage.

Harvest and Ancillary Use

Although the primary harvest is indirect — through the Lysander Beetle and its product, Lysander Parch — certain floors maintain direct cap collection for illumination of stairwells. The Ghost-Choir of the West Stairwell is reported to tune its resonances to the 490–520 nm pulse, though the Auditory Phantasma Taxonomy classes this as incidental rather than taxonomic.

Membranous preparations of the cap have been pulped with Ghost-Flax in experimental vellum, but the Commission for Archival Permanence notes that Memetic Vellum manufactured thus shows accelerated fibril degradation of an estimated 17%, attributed to the luminous overlap. A visitor to any husbandry floor is forbidden from extinguishing a cap by breath, as the resulting spore drift "confuses the beetle census for a full cycle."

Recorded Incidents

In the 4,187th recension, a colony on Floor 413 was reclassified under the Auditory Phantasma Taxonomy following a dispute over whether its pulse constituted a sound-generating phenomenon. The matter was settled by Procedural Recitation in favour of the Phyto-Chimeric listing, with the observation that "the cap is seen before it is heard, and the beetle is heard before it is seen." The Ghost in the Ledger: A Treatise on Absentee Functionaries cites this incident as evidence of the perils of cross-listing without a quorum of scribes.
