The Damp Vaults are a formally designated humidity-regulated zone encompassing Sub-level 71-A of the Tower, classified under the hybrid-variance designation 'Theta-Damp-7' by the Office of Stairwell Verification. Administered by the Scriptorium of Damp Vells, the Vaults are a Preserved Biosphere dedicated to the cultivation and study of hygroscopic phenomena, most notably the Lysander beetle and its byproducts. Ambient conditions are maintained at 87% relative humidity (±2%), a standard codified by Librarian-Prime Anselm the Damp and upheld by the rulings of the Symposium of the Damp Proof.

Physical and Environmental Characteristics

The Damp Vaults occupy a non-linear space adjacent to the Argent Vaults, with atmospheric exchange regulated by a series of desiccated-silica baffles. The primary construction material is a porous, grey stone that exhibits pronounced capillary action, contributing to the zone's stable hydrographic profile. Lighting is provided by banks of Spectral Grow Lamps tuned to frequencies conducive to fungal growth and insect activity. The persistent ambient moisture has led to the formation of unique mineral accretions on the vault ceilings, documented in the Supplement to Carnate Hydrographies, Vol. XII. Airflow is monitored via calibrated Type-2 laminar flow gauges stationed at each major aperture.

Primary Holdings and Biospheric Function

The Vaults' core function is the maintenance of the Lysander beetle colony. The insects subsist on a curated diet of lichen and are harvested for the excretion known as Lysander Parch, a substance of significant scribal utility. The entire lifecycle of the beetle, from larva to desiccation-resistant spore, occurs within the controlled environment. Secondary holdings include a collection of humidity-sensitive manuscripts on loan from the Parchment Vaults, used to study what Anselm the Damp termed "the hygroscopic negotiation of parchments with their environment." A small population of probability sparrows is also maintained, though their nesting habits are considered disruptive to measurement apparatus.

Administrative Jurisdiction and Concordances

Operational authority over the Damp Vaults is shared uneasily between the Scriptorium of Damp Vells and the broader mandates of the Symposium of the Damp Proof. This division stems from the resolution of the Dispute of the Damp Draft in the Year 119 of the Third Catalogue, which established the 87% humidity standard but left procedural oversight ambiguous. The Scriptorium handles daily maintenance and harvest cycles, while the Symposium retains the right to define and reclassify the zone's boundaries. This has led to numerous citations of contradictory Librarian Concordances, particularly concerning waste-water runoff into the adjacent Sighing Vaults.

Notable Incidents and Scholarly Disputes

The most significant recorded incident was a three-day "dewfall anomaly" in the Year 302, Third Catalogue, where humidity levels spontaneously peaked at 94%, threatening several parchment specimens. The anomaly was attributed by the Scriptorium to a faulty baffle, but a minority report filed by Scribe-Captain Aris of the Sublime Order of the T-Square suggested a resonant harmonic from the Sighing Vaults was the cause. The matter remains formally unresolved in the archives. A further scholarly dispute concerns the taxonomic classification of the primary vault mold: the Scriptorium insists it is a distinct species (Gliocladium umidus), while independent surveyors from the Argent Vaults contend it is a common strain also found in the Dormitory Vaults.

Access Protocols and Intersections

Access to the Damp Vaults requires dual authorization from both the Scriptorium and the Office of Stairwell Verification. The main entry point is via the Damp Stairwell, though a secured service corridor connects to containment bay A-V/7 of the Argent Vaults for specimen transfer. The Vaults are considered a critical node in the Tower's hydrographic cartography, and their conditions are routinely cited as precedent in petitions to establish new humidity-regulated zones elsewhere. All personnel are required to submit to a desiccation protocol upon exit to prevent spore dispersal into drier sectors.
