Parchment Vaults

MS 6890.84 · Places and structures

Parchment Vaults are the principal repositories for raw, processed, and decommissioned writing substrates across the Central Stacks. Governed under Clause 89, Annex 7 (On the Conservation of Surfaces), the Vaults are not a single location but a distributed network of specialized facilities, classified by both the material's origin and its designated fate.

Architectural Taxonomy

The network is subdivided into three primary tiers, each with distinct environmental and access protocols.

  • Primary (Raw) Vaults: Located primarily on the lower humidity Floors 4,002 through 4,020, these chambers house untreated hides, cured bladders, and bulk cellulose felts awaiting initial processing. The largest known facility, the West Wing Raw Repository, spans the entirety of Annex B on Floor 112.
  • Secondary (Conditioned) Vaults: These climate-controlled sectors store parchment that has undergone liming, stretching, and pumicing, but has not yet been assigned to a scribal order. The atmospheric composition is precisely regulated to maintain a state of "neutral potentiality," as defined in the Parchment Resolution.
  • Tertiary (Decommissioned) Vaults: Often colloquially termed "The Scriptoria of Silence," these secure archives are reserved for parchment that has been officially retired from circulation. This includes completed logbooks, superseded Concordances, and materials contaminated by unstable inks or cognitohazardous marginalia. The most notorious of these is The Vaults of Calcined Silence on Level -209.

Notable Holdings & Specimens

The Vaults are less a library and more a museum of potential surfaces. Curators maintain several reference collections of historical and metaphysical significance.

The Vance Dread-Cluster
Archived under Spiral 9 in the Argent Vaults, this collection of 117 Lysander parchment sheets serves as the master calibration sample for detecting and grading the quality of Vestigial Dread. Its origin is attributed to Surveyor-Prime Elara Vance.
The Miletus Resonance Shelves
A disputed collection of 889 felt-paper samples, each purported to vibrate sympathetically with a specific pitch of silence. Their authenticity is the core of The Miletus Fragment Dispute, which hinges on whether the resonance is a material property or an artifact of the shelving itself.
The Perishing Parchment Archive (Form 412-PP)
Established as a direct consequence of Amendment 12-b, this sub-vault contains all emergency-use parchment designed to degrade according to a precise temporal schedule. Access requires a dual-key system held by the Librarian of Ephemera and the Keeper of the Metrological Chronometers.

Administration & Concordant Conflicts

Jurisdiction is famously fragmented. The Sublime Order of the T-Square claims oversight of all geometric measurements pertaining to sheet sizing and storage rack angles. The Somatics Collegium, however, asserts that the "hand-feel" and acoustic properties of stored parchment are perceptions that resist the Order's instruments, a matter theoretically deferred to the Metrological Vaults for arbitration, though no definitive ruling has been recorded.

This bureaucratic ambiguity was highlighted during the Incident of the Migrating Map, wherein a cartographer's vellum sheet, stored in a Secondary Vault on Floor 7,112, was discovered to have spontaneously relocated itself to a shelf in the Dormitory Vaults. Investigation concluded the cause was "atmospheric persuasion through unattended narrative gravity," a non-actionable finding under the current Concordances.

Production & Replenishment

While the Vaults store material, the production of new parchment is the exclusive domain of the Parchment Ateliers of Sigma Spiral. Finished products, such as Parchment of Immediate Recall for witness testimony or Parchment of Perpetual Motion for journey logs, are delivered to the Secondary Vaults for final quality assurance. A key bio-indicator for the aerated waters used in finishing, Font Moss, is cultivated in channels running adjacent to the Primary Vaults on Floor 3,307.

Scholarly Disputes

The principal unresolved debate concerns the ontological status of blank parchment. The Traditionalist school, citing pre-Concordance scrolls, holds that an unmarked sheet possesses "latent narrativity" and must be stored in proximity to completed texts to prevent narrative starvation. The Reformists, invoking a strict reading of Amendment 12-b, argue a blank sheet is a pure instrument, and its storage conditions should be governed solely by atmospheric and temporal stability metrics. This dispute directly impacts shelving protocols and has led to the establishment of rival indexing systems within the same physical vaults.

A secondary, more esoteric disagreement involves the Probability Sparrow. Traditionalists claim the bird's nesting in the rafters of a Vault influences the stochastic quality of the parchment stored below, potentially increasing the chance of fortunate scribal errors. Reformists dismiss this as superstition, attributing any anomalous outcomes to drafts or uneven Lumenmoss growth.
