Guild of Parchment-Menders

MS 9109.96 · Guilds, orders and offices

Scope and standing

The Guild of Parchment-Menders is the designation under which the licensed cadre of parchment-menders operates within the Parchment Vaults and, by extension, across the substrates holdings of the Tower. It is a subsidiary body of the Guild of Luminary-Menders, constituted after the Schism as a specialist order with autonomous authority over Synthetic Parchment and certain classes of organic vellum. Its sanctioned duties, as enumerated in the Third Concordance, include re-binding delaminating polymer sheets, excising and replacing lost text sections, re-calibrating mnemonic resonance, and applying stabilizing washes.

The Guild's standing derives principally from Clause 9, Annex 4 of Amendment 12-b, which conferred upon it the licensure previously held in unitary form by the parent Guild. Oversight of its work is exercised by the Central Vault Quality Assurance Bureau, a body whose findings are advisory only and whose advice is, by long practice, treated as binding.

Constitution after the Schism

The Schism of the Menders' Guild, recorded between Records 55,901-alpha and 55,912-gamma, divided the Guild of Luminary-Menders over questions of procedural authority in Synthetic Parchment maintenance and over the interpretive precedence of the Third Concordance. The Conservative Chapter, led by Arcus of the Western Spire, retained the illumination and conveyance systems; the menders' faction withdrew into the vaulted levels and emerged as the present Guild.

Under Amendment 12-b, the Guild's activity surged. Ratification of the Amendment coincided with the Year of the Unfurled Parchment, during which a substantial volume of damaged substrate entered the Vaults for triage. The Guild's rolls doubled within two years, and ratification chits were issued to candidates who had previously served only as assistants. This expansion is widely regarded as the origin of the Guild's present procedural culture, in which throughput is recorded more reliably than outcome.

Re-calibration and narrative drift

The most frequently cited of the Guild's competencies is the re-calibration of mnemonic resonance in Parchment of Immediate Recall suffering from "narrative drift." The term, first defined in the Third Concordance, Annex 4, denotes a condition in which a recalled account remains internally coherent but has ceased to correspond to any recorded antecedent. The Guild's approved remedy is a partial re-calibration, after which the substrate is held under observation for one full cycle before release.

The procedure has not always succeeded. The case of the Bypass Maintenance Ledger, examined twice by the Guild regarding the handwriting attributed to Luminary Corvus, remains an unsettled precedent. The first examination concluded that the hand was consistent; the second, conducted eleven months later with a different panel, concluded that it was not. Neither report has been withdrawn, and both are cited in support of opposing positions in the dispute over the Miletus Fragment Petition.

"Where two examinations of the same hand disagree, the later shall not supersede the earlier; both shall stand until a third is convened."

— Third Concordance, Annex 7

No third examination has been convened.

Workshops and facilities

The Guild's principal workshops are the Parchment Ateliers of Sigma Spiral, a suite of vaulted chambers arranged along a descending helix. The Ateliers adjoin the Silent Scriptorium, where freshly stabilized sheets are held before cataloguing. The Ateliers also maintain a small annex for the repair of perishing parchment, a substrate class whose degradation is considered irreversible under the current reading of Amendment 12-b, though Guild menders continue to accept such work.

Among the Guild's more specialized outputs is Lumen-Scribe's Parchment, produced under licence for the illumination of long-form concordances, and Parchment of Perpetual Motion, whose manufacture is governed by Theoretical Spool Dynamics and which the Guild declines to repair once it has left the Ateliers.

Disputed authority

The precise boundary of the Guild's jurisdiction remains contested. The parent Guild of Luminary-Menders holds that the menders' mandate extends only to substrate, not to the systems that convey or illuminate it; the Guild maintains that any defect touching the sheet is properly its own. The disagreement was nominally settled by the Treatise on the Qualities of Dimness, which resolved the related disputes between Luminaries and the parent Guild but left the subsidiary question open.

A second dispute concerns the Guild's power to refuse work. Clause 9 of Amendment 12-b grants the Guild discretion to decline procedures it judges unsafe for the substrate; the Central Vault Quality Assurance Bureau reads this as requiring prior written justification, while the Guild reads it as self-executing. In practice, the Bureau's objections are logged and the work proceeds. The logs themselves are held in a separate ledger, which the Bureau is not permitted to index.
