Synthetic Parchment

MS 8157.18 · Objects and instruments

Synthetic Parchment is a class of artificially manufactured writing substrate designed to emulate the properties of organic parchment while offering enhanced durability, chemical stability, and compliance with specific archival mandates. Governed by clauses 7 through 14 of the Parchment Resolution, its production, grading, and disposal fall under the purview of the Central Vault Quality Assurance Bureau.

“A substitution is not a forgery if it fulfills the original function without claiming the original essence. The vellum mourns; the polymer does not. This is its virtue.”

— From the dissenting opinion in The Miletus Fragment Dispute, recorded on Parchment of Immediate Recall
A foundational text of the Intentionalist School, often cited in debates on substrate authenticity.

Manufacture and Regulation

Synthetic parchment is produced primarily in the Polymer Laminates Wing of the Parchment Ateliers of Sigma Spiral. The base laminate, designated Polymer-Sigma-7, is infused with a microcrystalline cellulose matrix to mimic the tooth and opacity of skin-based vellum. A final coat of inert acrylic resin provides resistance to humidity, atmospheric yearning fluctuations, and acidic inks. Per Annex 4-C, all batches must undergo a 240-hour exposure test in the Chamber of Neutral Atmospheres to ensure no catalytic interaction with ambient vellichor or its antipode.

The Directorate of Field Verification maintains strict standards regarding electrostatic properties. Their Bulletin 112 notes that certain early formulations (Series Alpha through Gamma) could accumulate a "subtle, non-conductive static charge," a flaw corrected in Series Delta and later by incorporating a grounded silica weave into the substrate core.

Classification and Uses

Synthetic parchment is categorized under a tripartite system established by the Parchment Resolution:

Class A: Permanent Record
Used for logging expedition manifests, Concordance supplements, and architectural plans for permanent structures. Must have a projected stability of no less than 500 Tower years.
Class B: Transitory Administrative
The category encompassing forms like the Perishing Parchment, used for temporary inventory logs on Floors like 412. These are chemically treated to begin a controlled molecular disaggregation 60 days after final notation.
Class C: Specialized Application
Includes substrates like the journey-log parchment sensitive to barometric pressure, and materials used for Receiving Slates. A notorious subclass, 7-C (Non-Regretful), was discontinued following the Shortage of ’55.

The Authenticity Debates

The adoption of synthetic parchment has been a point of contention between the Intentionalist and Materialist archival schools. The Intentionalists argue that the information, not the medium, is paramount, making synthetic materials ideal for their consistency. Materialists counter that certain forms of knowledge, particularly those pertaining to non-local phenomena or pre-Cataclysm events, are intrinsically linked to the organic memory of animal-skin parchment. This debate was central to The Miletus Fragment Dispute, where synthetic backing layers were discovered in a purportedly ancient document.

A practical compromise, codified in Amendment 12-b, is the "doctrine of specific intent." It dictates that any document whose ceremonial or probative function is defined by its organic origin (e.g., witness oaths in Casefolio 112-A) must use true parchment, while all procedural, duplicative, or environmental-record functions may employ synthetic variants.

Documented Anomalies

Despite its engineered predictability, synthetic parchment is not without idiosyncrasies. The most famous is the Incident of the Migrating Map, wherein a Class-A synthetic chart of the Lower Recesses, stored adjacent to a Lysander-based original, gradually over seventy-two years transferred the cartographic details of a nonexistent "Lacuna Stairwell" from the organic to the synthetic sheet. The Directorate of Field Verification attributed this to residual Font Moss particulates in the Lysander parchment's finish acting as a bio-catalytic agent, though this remains a minority hypothesis.

Furthermore, Junior Indexers are trained to identify "synthetic ghosting," a faint, non-tactile after-image that can appear on a Class-A sheet that has been stored in direct planar alignment with a high-density Intentionalist manuscript for over a century. This is considered a cosmetic defect and does not void the document's authority.

Disposal and Recycling

Decommissioned synthetic parchment, particularly Perishing forms, is processed in the Sigma Spiral ateliers. Through a solvent-recovery procedure detailed in the Parchment Resolution's Annex 7, the polymer laminate is separated and re-pelletized, while the ink-laden cellulose matrix is incinerated. The ash, by mandate, is sealed in ceramic canisters and deposited in the archival midden on Floor 788, a site perpetually monitored for "conceptual leachate." This process underscores the Tower's principle that even a substitute, once it has borne a record, acquires a nominal potentiality that must be neutrally sequestered.
