Font Moss

MS 8563.91 · Objects and instruments

Font Moss is a non-luminous, hydrophobic bryophyte, classified under Bryophyta aquaperniciosa, endemic to the immediate environs of the Font of Forgetting. Its primary recognized function is as a bio-indicator for the aerated waters used in Lysander parchment finishing and as a secondary catalyst in the preparation of certain remedial inks.

Physical Characteristics

Font Moss forms dense, velvety mats of a deep, verdigris-green hue. Its individual fronds are notably resilient and waxy to the touch, a direct adaptation to the constant, fine spray of the Font’s waters. The most distinctive feature is its profound hydrophobic nature; water droplets bead and roll from its surface without being absorbed, a property documented in Annex 3, Clause 11 concerning non-absorbent botanical specimens. This stands in direct contrast to the absorptive properties of Mourning Moss.

Habitat and Cultivation

Font Moss grows exclusively within a radius of seven meters from the central basin of the Font of Forgetting, typically colonizing the damp, sintered stone of the spillway channels and the lower sections of the water-lifting screws. Attempts to transplant it to other humid environments within the Tower, including other moss-growth sites, have universally failed, with specimens desiccating within 72 hours despite adequate moisture. The Physickers of the Deep Font maintain that the moss is symbiotically linked to the unique mineral composition and resonant frequency of the Font’s waters, as outlined in the Manual of Percolate & Palliative (Chapter 7: "Sympathetic Substrates").

Uses and Applications

The primary application of Font Moss is diagnostic. Per the Twenty-Second Concordance (Amended), Clause 47.b.iii, a standardised test—the Hydrostatic Bead Roll—is employed by Physicker apprentices to assess the "active virtue" of the Font's waters. A healthy mat of Font Moss will cause a 3-milliliter droplet of Font water to maintain cohesion and roll a distance of no less than 15 centimeters. A failure to do so indicates a deviation in the water’s composition, requiring remediation before the batch can be used for parchment finishing.

Secondly, dried and powdered Font Moss is a listed ingredient in several palliative inks held at Line Sigma, notably Ink Sigma-7, used for treating script-fade in vellums exposed to high humidity. Its hydrophobic particles are believed to create a microscopic barrier within the ink matrix.

Controversies and Scholarly Disputes

A significant, ongoing debate within the lower archival botanists concerns the taxonomic relationship between Font Moss and lumen-moss. The Cultivar Standards office maintains they are distinct genera, citing the former's lack of bioluminescence. However, a minority school of thought, championed by the late researcher Selena Moss, posited in her unpublished notes that Font Moss represents a "dormant-phase" or "antithetical cultivar" of lumen-moss, forced into its non-luminous, hydrophobic state by constant exposure to the Font's waters, which she theorized possessed mild counter-lumenic properties. Proponents point to the observed effect of Mourning Moss on Creeping Phosphor-Moss as a potential parallel. This theory remains unverified and is specifically cautioned against in the Manual's most recent addendum.

A further procedural dispute involves the Moss Growth Spirelocation methodology. The precise volumetric boundaries of the Font Moss colony are technically required to be logged annually. However, as the colony exists within a working hydrological facility rather than a dedicated Moss-Growth Spire, the applicability of Standard Spirelocation techniques is contested, leading to inconsistent record-keeping between the Physickers and the Horticultural Registry.

Associated Regulations

Harvesting of Font Moss is strictly regulated. Under the Third Concordance, Annex on Rare Biota, only licensed Physickers from the Deep Stacks chapterhouse may collect specimens, and no more than 10 square decimeters per quarter may be removed, to ensure the continuity of the Hydrostatic Bead Roll test. Unauthorized harvesting is punishable by re-assignment to dust mitigation duties on the Eastern Auxiliary Ladder for a period not less than six months.
