The Lysander Beetle (Chrysomelida lysandrae)
MS 7003.13 · Objects and instruments
The Lysander Beetle (Chrysomelida lysandrae) is a flightless, bioluminescent coleopteran endemic to the fungal biomes of Sub-level 71-A (The Damp Vaults). It is the sole biological source of Lysander Parch, a writing medium of significant archival importance. The beetle is classified under Preservation Directive 7.12.α as a Keystone Cultigen within a Preserved Biosphere.
Physical Description
Adult specimens measure 4–5 cm in length. The carapace is a deep, iridescent blue-black, exhibiting a pronounced hygroscopic quality that allows the beetle to absorb ambient moisture from its environment. Its most distinctive feature is a pair of sub-elytral photophores that emit a soft, greenish luminescence with a peak wavelength of 510 nm. This bioluminescence is continuous, though its intensity correlates with atmospheric humidity levels within the Vaults. The beetle is flightless; its atrophied wings are fused to the abdomen. Instead, it propels itself via six powerful, spine-covered legs adapted for traversing dense fungal substrates.
Habitat & Ecology
The species' range is exclusively confined to the mycological groves of The Damp Vaults, where it subsists entirely on the Ghost-cap (Phantasma fungorum). The beetle’s digestive system neutralizes the mushroom’s inherent psychotropic compounds, a process integral to the subsequent parchment-making procedure. It lives in small, loosely organized colonies, often inhabiting the hollows of giant shelf fungi. The perpetual 98% humidity and constant 15°C temperature of its habitat are maintained by the Archival Custodial Engine pursuant to Third Concordance, Annex Γ.
Role in Parchment Production
The production of Lysander Parch is a multi-stage alchemical process overseen by the Sub-curator of Organic Media. Upon reaching maturity, beetles are harvested under protocols established by Lysander the Circumspect. The hide is then carefully excised, treated with a tannin solution derived from Font Moss, and cured on stretching frames within a dedicated athanor chamber. The final product is a semi-translucent, incredibly durable sheet that is both water-resistant and highly receptive to iron-gall and symbiotic inks. A single beetle yields approximately one decimetre of usable parchment.
Taxonomic Controversy
A persistent scholarly dispute concerns the beetle’s relation to the Luminous Beetle of Perpetual Afternoon. The Office of Perpetual Affairs, which catalogued the Luminous Beetle in LY 118, has periodically asserted that Chrysomelida lysandrae is merely a morphological variant adapted to a subterranean environment, a claim founded on superficial similarities in carapace resin. This is contradicted by the Fifth Concordance, Clause 802, which lists them as distinct species under the custodianship of different administrative spirals. The debate is further complicated by the Chamber of Echoing Precedents' ruling in LY 342, which declared the matter "provisionally concurrent," effectively allowing both classifications to exist in parallel records.
Administrative Oversight
Jurisdiction over the beetle and its groves is shared, a arrangement detailed in the Accord of Shared Provenance (LY 215). The Librarian-Stewards of Spiral 9 manage the physical biosphere and harvesting quotas, while the Office of Perpetual Affairs retains oversight of any "luminous by-products," a category they interpret broadly. This division of responsibility has led to intricate procedural requirements, such as the mandatory presence of an observer from each office during any harvest exceeding three specimens, as documented in the Log of Permanent Transactions, Folio 71-A/12.
Cultural & Archival Significance
Beyond its practical utility, the Lysander Beetle occupies a notable place in archival lore. The Lysander technique, a method for temporary inscription later adopted for the Parchment of Immediate Recall, was allegedly first tested using early, imperfect samples of Lysander Parch. Furthermore, the beetle's required habitat conditions were a key case study in the development of Lysander the Circumspect's Mending Protocols, which address environmental inconsistencies within preserved archives. The species stands as a testament to the Tower's principle that an object's reality is affirmed and sustained by the meticulousness of its documentation.
