Preserved Biosphere
MS 3639.02 · Practices and doctrines
Preserved Biosphere denotes an archival classification for environments deemed anomalous, self-contained, and of sufficient perceptual integrity to warrant their continued existence as discrete units within The Tower. The designation is governed by the Concordance of Atmospheric Archives, which defines a Preserved Biosphere as "a bounded spatial volume in which the environmental conditions, and the entities sustained by them, are maintained in a state of perpetual procedural stasis for the purposes of study and reference."
Criteria and Designation
An area may be nominated for classification as a Preserved Biosphere by any Librarian of Third Rank or higher. The nomination must be submitted to the Central Scriptorium on a Nictitating Vellum and must include, at minimum: a volumetric survey, a catalogue of indigenous phenomena, and a statement of existential coherence. Final approval rests with the Curator of Environmental Holdings, whose decision, per Clause VII of the aforementioned Concordance, "shall be final, irrevocable, and preserved within the Vault of Original Instruments."
The criteria are notoriously interpretable. For instance, the requirement for "existential coherence" has been cited to justify the preservation of environments as diverse as the silent, lightless Gallery of Perpetual Dusk and the cacophonous, verdant Damp Vaults. The latter houses the Lysander Parch, an insect whose life cycle is entirely dependent on the specific humidity and acoustic resonance found only within that Vault, making it a classic example of a codependent biospheric system.
Maintenance Protocols
Once designated, a Preserved Biosphere enters a regime of Palliative Maintenance. This involves not the prevention of change, but the meticulous documentation and replication of its cyclical processes. Aeration schedules, condensation cycles, and shadow migrations are logged and enforced by a dedicated corps of Environmental Scribes. The Principle of Bureaucratic Precedence is invoked to resolve conflicts between maintaining stasis and adhering to standard archival decay-vector mitigation; the preservation of the biosphere’s defining processes always takes precedence.
Alterations to the environment, even those caused by the natural processes being preserved, require a Temporary Inscription filed with the Master of Atmospheres. This creates a legal and procedural record of the change, effectively incorporating it into the biosphere’s official "life."
Controversies and Disputes
The most significant scholarly dispute concerns the ontology of Preserved Biospheres. The Traditionalist School, led by the late Archivist Parnell, holds that they are windows into the Tower’s foundational, pre-conceptual state—"the dreams the architecture had before it settled into stone." The Reformist School, following the work of Luminary Theron (whose logs are preserved in the Central Scriptorium), argues they are not relics but active, bureaucratic artifacts—the preserved results of historical administrative actions, aligning with the theory of Intentional Erosion. This debate is preserved in a series of polemical tracts filed under Annex Theta-4 of the Canon of Preserved Absences, as the original seminar chamber where the debate peaked was later dissolved for violating air-circulation ordinances.
A further, more pragmatic controversy surrounds biospheric "bleed." Instances have been recorded where phenomena from a Preserved Biosphere, such as the distinctive melancholic spores from the Fungal Atrium or the peculiar conductive properties of Lysander Beetle chitin, have manifested in adjacent, non-designated stacks. Resolution of such incidents falls under Decrees of Conveyance, often resulting in the expansion of the Biosphere’s official boundaries or the creation of a buffer zone catalogued as an Emotional Fossil.
Notable Examples
- The Damp Vaults
- The most frequently cited example, a labyrinth of warm, mist-filled stone shelves sustaining a unique ecosystem centered on the Lysander Parch.
- The Scriptorium of Damp Vells
- Officially a repository for Condensation Folios, its constant 98% humidity and daily rainfall pattern earned it a dual designation as a Preserved Biosphere in A.Y. 12,447.
- The Chamber of Suspended Breath
- A perfectly spherical room on Floor 304 where air does not circulate but hangs in distinct, stratified layers of different ages and compositions, each catalogued and preserved.
Legal and Procedural Status
The contents of a Preserved Biosphere are exempt from standard deaccession and redistribution protocols. Any entity originating within one is considered inseparable from its environment and cannot be entered into the general Master Folio of Pending Evidence. Disputes regarding ownership or study rights of biospheric phenomena are adjudicated by reference to the environmental maintenance logs, not standard provenance records. The ultimate authority is the biosphere itself, as interpreted through its duly appointed Curator. As stated in the Register of Dissolved Movements, the governing motto is Aperire ut Sit—"to open so that it may be."
