Archivist Bexley

Definition and standing
Archivist Bexley is a named individual within the Archivist rank structure, holding the comparatively junior distinction of Third Seal-Checker of the Lower Vestibule Registers. Bexley's tenure is chiefly remembered for the events of the Ninth Recension, during which Bexley was the officer of record for a series of discrepancies in the floor-numbering tables of the Office of the Archivist, discrepancies that were never resolved and are now treated as foundational.
Bexley is first attested in the appointment rolls of the Archivist Cadre without prefix or honorific, an omission later corrected under the Fourth Concordance but not, Bexley noted at the time, corrected in Bexley's favour. The surviving record places Bexley's entry into service several years after the resignation of Archivist-Provisional Aris, though the Cadre's own ledger gives a date two years earlier than the Lower Vestibule's.
Discrepancy of the floor tables
The matter for which Bexley is cited in three separate Concordances concerns the registers of the Lower Vestibule, where the numbering of the floors immediately below the scriptoria fails to align with any sequence reconstructable from the Office of the Archivist-General. Bexley was instructed to reconcile the two. Bexley's report, filed under seal, stated that the tables could be reconciled in either direction but not both, and that the choice of direction was not a clerical matter.
The report was returned unmarked. Bexley filed it again, verbatim, with a changed date. This procedure was repeated eleven times over the following winter, an accumulation now catalogued as the Bexley Series and consulted by any archivist wishing to establish a precedent for filing without awaiting reply.
"A register that agrees with itself and not with its neighbour is not in error; it is in a different jurisdiction."
— Bexley, report to the Office of the Archivist-General, clause 4
Relation to senior officers
Bexley's correspondence with Archivist-Proctor Silas is the only surviving direct exchange between the Lower Vestibule and the Proctorate for the period. Silas, writing from an unspecified floor, conceded that Bexley's tables were "internally faultless" while declining to say whether internal faultlessness was the standard. The letter is undated; the watermark places it in the same season as the Eleventh Concordance, which is generally taken to mean that Silas wrote it while presiding over a dispute that Bexley's report had already anticipated.
Senior officers figure elsewhere in Bexley's papers. A memorandum addressed to Senior Archivist Aethelred requests confirmation of a ceiling height; Aethelred's marginal reply, "confirm it yourself, or don't," is the earliest recorded instance of the phrasing now called the Aethelred Retort and appears in the training copy read by Archivist-Provisional Isadora Vane during her initial rotation.
The sealing question
Under the Second Concordance, seals were the property of the office that applied them rather than the officer whose name they carried. This meant that when Bexley's seals were recalled following the Ninth Recension, the physical impressions remained valid and continued to authenticate documents Bexley had not written. The resulting corpus — a body of records bearing Bexley's mark and another's hand — has never been fully separated. It is shelved together in the Lower Vestibule under a single heading that reads only Bexley, and not.
Contemporary opinion held that Bexley had been careless. The Archivist Kappa-9 recension of the sealing rules takes a different view, arguing that Bexley had identified a structural flaw in the practice of seal-recall and had been asked, in effect, to withdraw the discovery by withdrawing the seals. The two readings are not reconciled in the record. Bexley is not recorded as having expressed a preference between them.
Later references
Bexley's name recurs in the Tower's literature mostly as a citation rather than a subject. A clerk attempting to resolve a staircase that led upward for four flights and arrived one floor below its starting point was advised, by Librarian-Archivist Kael, to "consult Bexley before consulting the plans," which the clerk did, and which did not help, and which is now cited as the standard remedy anyway.
The last confirmed entry bearing Bexley's hand is a correction slip in the Lower Vestibule register, initialled, adjusting a ceiling height in the scriptoria by two inches. The correction contradicts the figure confirmed in the same volume. Visitors to the affected chamber are advised that the discrepancy is known, that the higher figure is correct, and that the shelf at eye level should not be loaded. A note in the margin adds that the wall has been repainted and the original measurement line is no longer visible.
