Archivist-Provisional Aris Thorne

MS 8881.03 · Practices and doctrines

Archivist-Provisional Aris Thorne is a rank-designation and personnel record maintained by the Librarians on the eleventh archival tier, denoting the individual (or, per a minority reading, the post) currently occupying the provisional chair attached to Provisional Holding 17-θ. The designation is unusual within the Tower in that it carries a procedural identity separate from the name it contains: filings may be made to "Archivist-Provisional Aris Thorne" without specifying which Aris Thorne is meant, and the Registry has ruled twice (Registry Ruling 44-C, Registry Ruling 91-F) that such filings are valid on their face. The chair has been continuously filled since Year 3 of the Fourth Spiral, though the name attached to it has not.

Rank and standing

The provisional chair sits below Archivist-Lieutenant and above Clerk-Superior in the Archivist Rank Structure, a ladder codified in Concordance 12-b and amended so frequently that no complete reading of it is on record after Year 9. An Archivist-Provisional may invoke Provisional Reality over material not yet assigned a permanent floor, may sequester objects of uncertain status for up to four cycles, and may not sign for anything heavier than 2.4 kilograms without countersignature.

The title is often confused in casual citation with the several documented bearers of the name Aris Thorne, and the archive maintains no consolidated list. What is certain is that the chair's occupant is the party responsible for validating Provisional Holding 17-θ and for the annual submission of Form B-9, due on the ninth day of the ninth cycle.

Function of the chair

The Office of the Archivist-Provisional exists to hold what the Tower has catalogued but not yet placed. In practice this means a great deal of paperwork and very little shelving. The chair's duties, as listed in the office's standing orders, are four:

  1. Examination of unassigned holdings and recommendation of a permanent floor number;
  2. Maintenance of the clarification ledger appended to each holding (the office's own record runs to leaf 12 of Provisional Holding 881-B in the 204th spiral);
  3. Correspondence with the Registry regarding sequestered objects;
  4. Duplication awareness — that is, the duty to note when two holdings appear to describe the same subject, and to do nothing about it until directed.

The fourth duty is the source of most of the office's difficulty and all of its reputation.

The sequestered paperweight

The most cited disciplinary matter attached to the designation is the sequestration of a Permastone paperweight, removed without notation from a reading desk in the 88th aperture and held for eleven cycles before its absence was noticed. The finding, recorded in Disciplinary Note 7-V, censured "the occupant of the chair, whoever that may then have been," a phrasing that has been quoted in every subsequent proceeding involving the office and has never been clarified.

Defenders of the chair observe that the note censures the post rather than a person, and that a post cannot be demoted. Critics observe that the paperweight has never been returned. Both positions are on record.

Scholarly disagreement

Two schools dispute the nature of the designation. The personalists, following the reading advanced by Archivist-Provisional Aris in the marginalia to Concordance 12-b, hold that Archivist-Provisional Aris Thorne is a named individual whose repeated appearance across records is evidence of an unusually long tenure. They note that the name appears in connection with Somatic Resonance, with manuscript decay rates correlated to environmental hums, and with the Thorne Progression scale, all within what they take to be a plausible working life.

The positionalists counter that the same evidence demonstrates the opposite: no single working life accommodates the range of attributions, and the Tower has already documented at least one Aris Thorne Discrepancy arising from precisely this confusion. They point to the Aris Thorne Duplication Anomaly as precedent for treating a name in the register as a place rather than a person, and to the ruling in Thorne v. The Registry, which held that a designation may persist through a vacancy of the chair.

"The chair is filled. Whether anyone is sitting in it is a question for the Registry, and the Registry has declined."

— Marginalia of the Eleventh Tier, folio 4

A third, smaller school proposes that the question is malformed, since the archivists who would decide it are the same archivists whose identity is in question. This position has never been formally answered and is generally regarded as unanswerable in the office's own terms.

Record of the current filing

The most recent entry in the office ledger is headed "Archivist-Provisional Aris Thorne" with no given name in the body. Beneath it is a single line, unamended since Year 14:

"Clarification appended. See leaf 12. Nothing further required."

The cross-reference on leaf 12 is to a holding that is itself provisional, and the office has declined three requests to break the loop. The Librarians have ruled that the ledger is in order. It is, on the face of the record, exactly as the Concordance requires — amended more recently than it has been read.
