Archivist-Provisional Aris

MS 8095.57 · Persons

Archivist-Provisional Aris was a merged designation active during the later reforms of Cycle 231, denoting an individual holding the provisional authority of both the Archivist and Librarian-Provisional ranks within the Office of the Archivist-General. The role was an administrative experiment intended to streamline the processing of newly defined ontological categories, particularly those arising from the taxonomic crises in the lower sectors.

Formation and Mandate

The position was established by Amendment 12-b to the Seventh Concordance, which authorized the creation of “hybrid provisional stations” to address backlog in the validation of speculative catalogues. Archivist-Provisional Aris, whose personal designation was drawn from the existing Librarian-Provisional Aris post, was granted dual signing authority for field notes, shelf-mark assignments, and permit adjudications. The role’s primary operational theater was the interstitial bureaucracy between the Archives of Manifest Content and the Vestibule of Provisional Tenancy.

As outlined in Circular 4409-δ, the mandate was threefold: to reconcile contradictory cataloguing methodologies between the Archivist and Librarian corps; to expedite the docketing of permits for research into “subjects of ambiguous reality”; and to serve as a single point of accountability for any ontological leakage resulting from such research. The office was provisionally housed in Annex 7 of the West Stack, sharing logistical support with the Office of New Supports.

Notable Actions and Rulings

Archivist-Provisional Aris is most frequently cited for their handling of Provisional Research Permit 4409, concerning ‘The Symmetry of Absent Footnotes.’ Exercising their provisional adjudication power, they ruled that footnotes which logically should exist but do not could be catalogued under a new sub-class, “Anticipatory Referents.” This created a precedent later criticized by Senior Archivist Aethelred as “a profound category error that privileges simplistic claims of potentiality over documented absence” (see Aris Reconciliation).

Their tenure also saw the formalization of the Somatic Resonance index. While Junior Archivist Aris Thorne first documented the phenomenon, it was Archivist-Provisional Aris who mandated its inclusion in all provisional subject dossiers, arguing that a cataloguer’s physiological response to a non-existent subject was itself a valid datum. This policy is still debated within the Archivist-Proctor Silas school of thought.

Controversy and the Doctrine of Blended Identity

A persistent scholarly dispute surrounds the identity of Archivist-Provisional Aris. The Prevailing View holds that the designation was a temporary administrative overlay applied to the individual then serving as Librarian-Provisional Aris. However, a minority interpretation, advanced by scholars of the Aris Spiral, argues that “Archivist-Provisional Aris” was a distinct legal entity created by the concordantal amendment—a bureaucratic persona that operated independently, and whose directives were occasionally at odds with those issued by the underlying Librarian-Provisional. This is supported by archival records showing dual, sometimes conflicting, memoranda signed on the same date by “Librarian-Provisional Aris” and “Archivist-Provisional Aris.”

The controversy stems from Clause 14 of Amendment 12-b, which states that a blended station “shall absorb the duties but not necessarily the consciousness of its constituent offices.” Whether this was meant metaphorically or literally is the core of the disagreement.

Dissolution and Legacy

The office was dissolved at the commencement of Cycle 232, following the Aris Reconciliation proceedings. Its functions were redistributed: adjudicatory powers reverted to the Librarian-Provisional stream, while archival validation duties were returned to the Office of the Archivist-General. The experiment is generally considered a failure in administrative design, though it produced a significant body of procedural case law.

The directorship of the Office of New Supports was subsequently assumed by Lysandra Vex. The personal designation “Aris” resurfaced in later cycles in various forms, including Steward Aris and Clerk-Provisional Aris Thorn, custodian of the Collection of Unallocated Doors. Most scholars regard these as separate individuals, per the Tower’s doctrine of coincidental names, though the Aris of the West Stack tradition maintains a continuous lineage of service.
