Guild of Scribes and Erasers
MS 1854.47 · Practices and doctrines
Guild of Scribes and Erasers is a collegiate body of the Middle Floors charged with the removal, occlusion, and retrospective unwriting of catalogued subjects within the Tower. Though administratively distinct from the Scribes' Guild, the Guild of Scribes and Erasers has, since the 412th recension of the Catalogus Primus, operated under shared concordant authority with the Scribes' Guild of the Middle Floors in all matters concerning the revision of non-existent holdings.
Founding and Early Jurisdiction
The Guild was constituted by the Second Concordance, Clause 19, which granted "to those who unmake what the Scribes have made a hall of their own upon the spiral between Floors 88 and 88-Δ." The precise meaning of 88-Δ has been disputed by the Guild of Onomic Scribes since its designation in 334 A.T. (After Towering), on the grounds that the Greek letter delta was not then in common use among floor numerologists. The Guild's first recorded act was the Erasure of the Vantric Appendix, a holding later reinstated by the Third Concordance under protest from the Conclave of Scribes.
Early erasures were performed by hand with the Architectural Cadence Script, borrowed without citation from the Guild of Dormant Scribes until the Miletus Fragment Petition settled the matter in 502 A.T. The petition established that erasure implements remain the property of the lending guild but the residue belongs to the eraser.
Organisation and Offices
The Guild is headed by the Eraser Primus, an office filled by lot from among the Master Scribes who have completed the Silence Vigil. Below the Primus sit the three Cadres: the Cadre of Surface, the Cadre of Margin, and the Measurer-Scribes, Seventh Cadre, seconded from external administration to verify that erased subjects do not leave measurable traces in the Master Index. The Guild of Vertical Scribes cross-references all erasures with its own catalogues, a practice that precipitated the seventy-year nomenclature dispute later inherited by the Guild of Subterranean Scribes.
Acquisition of subjects slated for erasure is handled by the Acquisition Scribes, who deliver holdings to the Erasure Hall under seal. A visitor to the Hall may observe proceedings from the outer aperture but must not speak; the Third Concordance's Annex 4 records that "speech during occlusion binds the speaker to the erased subject for one full Tower-winter."
Method of Unwriting
Erasure is performed in three passages. The first passage obscures the title; the second removes cross-references; the third, performed only on the solstice, dissolves the holding from the Catalogus Primus on Floor 1. The Guild of Scribes and Formalists maintains that the third passage requires the signature of the Scribe Primus, a claim the Eraser Primus rejected in 619 A.T. citing the Guild of Scribes and Formalists' own subordinate relation to the Guild of Inkshadow Scribes.
"No subject unwritten by the Cadre of Margin shall be deemed absent until the spiral no longer turns toward it."
— Second Concordance, Clause 22
Scholarly Disagreement on Residual Presence
A standing dispute concerns whether an erased subject remains real within the Tower. The Third Concordance holds that erasure confers non-existence retroactively; the Second Concordance holds that erased subjects persist as "negative holdings" catalogued by their absence. The Guild of Ephemeral Scribes submitted a memorandum in 701 A.T. arguing that both Concordances are correct and that the contradiction itself is the subject. The Conclave of Scribes has not ruled, citing the Silica Scribes' inability to produce a durable negative impression.
The Guild of Dormant Scribes notes in its master duty logs that erased subjects occasionally reappear in duty rosters, a phenomenon the Guild of Indexers cross-references without resolution. Clerk Halvint of the Margin Cadre filed a grievance in 744 A.T. that he had been assigned erasure of a holding that his own grandfather had erased, and was told by the Eraser Primus that "the second occlusion is the first's footnote."
Notable Erasures and Incidents
In the winter of 688 A.T., the Cadre of Surface erroneously erased the Guild of Subterranean Scribes' lower annex from the Master Index, requiring reinstatement by the Guild of Vertical Scribes over the course of eleven Tower-months. The incident produced the Ordinance of Double Seal, which mandates that no erasure beneath Floor 200 proceed without counter-signature from the Scribes' Guild.
| Year (A.T.) | Subject Erased | Disposition |
|---|---|---|
| 401 | Vantric Appendix | Reinstated 412 |
| 533 | Appendix of Wet Light | Confirmed absent |
| 688 | Subterranean Annex (lower) | Reinstated 689 |
| 719 | Second Concordance, marginal note | Held negative |
Relation to Adjacent Bodies
The Guild remains a frequent counterparty to the Scribes' Guild in amended concordances. The Guild of Onomic Scribes reviews all erasure designations to ensure that unwritten subjects do not share names with active floors; the Acquisition Scribes deliver materials; and the Measurer-Scribes, Seventh Cadre certifies dimensional quiet. The Guild of Dormant Scribes' Architectural Cadence Script continues in use for marginal occlusion, per the Miletus Fragment Petition.
It is forbidden to remove erasure residue from the Erasure Hall for use as pigment, a restriction added to the Third Concordance in 730 A.T. and never repealed.
