Catalogus Primus
MS 8074.81 · Objects and instruments
Catalogus Primus is the master ledger of all active holdings, formally housed on Floor 1. It is a monolithic stone ledger whose continuous updating and correction is the primary duty of the Scribes' Guild, in accordance with Clauses 1-7 of the First Concordance. The ledger lists every floor by its Tower-assigned number and current canonical name, serving as the foundational instrument of bibliographical order. No holding is considered fully catalogued until its subject, floor, and authorized classification have been inscribed within the Catalogus Primus.
Physical Description
The ledger itself is a single rectangular slab of grey igneous stone, measuring 4.2 x 2.1 x 0.3 meters. Its surface is deeply incised with vertical columns, each approximately 5 cm wide. Entries are made by a designated Scribe using a stylus tipped with Sleeping Ink, which etches the stone with a permanent, faintly luminous line. The great weight of the stone requires it to rest on a permanent plinth; the left folio is perpetually held open by the Ledger-weight, a hemispherical companion stone of identical material. The right folio is turned only during the quarterly Verification, a process detailed in Addendum 17-d.
Administrative Function
Authority to inscribe or amend the Catalogus Primus is vested solely in the Scribes' Guild, acting under the supervision of the Librarians. Each new floor discovered by expedition is provisionally recorded in the Ledger of Temporary Holdings until a consensus name is ratified, at which point a formal entry is carved. Disputes over naming or classification are resolved by reference to the Concordances, with the Catalogus Primus itself often cited as the final arbiter of factual record. As Archivist-Primus Valence notes in On Physical Jurisprudence, "The stone does not argue; it is the argument made manifest."
The Problem of Reflexivity
A persistent scholarly debate concerns the ledger’s own entry. The Catalogus Primus is, by definition, a holding of the Tower — a master list of holdings. It therefore must catalogue itself. Its listed location is "Floor 1, Central Atrium," but its listed subject has been the source of contention. The current inscription reads "Catalogus Primus: The register of this register," a formulation stabilized after the Third Concordance invalidated the previous, more recursive entry ("Catalogus Primus: The register of registers including this one"). Archivist-Primus Valens argues that this is a tautological dead end, while the Guild maintains it is a necessary foundational loop.
Amendment Protocol
Changes to the ledger are governed by a strict protocol. A proposed amendment must be submitted in triplicate on standardized parchment to the office of the Scribe Primus. If the amendment concerns a name, it must be accompanied by three independent expedition logs confirming the floor’s attributes. The Scribe Primus then convenes a committee of five guild members to review the proposal against extant Concordances. Approved amendments are enacted during the monthly Scriptorum, a silent ceremony witnessed by two Librarians. Notable amendments include the reclassification of Variant Alpha to Lumenmus primus in Cycle 892 and the striking of Floor 7,304 ("The Hall of Unfinished Melodies") after the Second Concordance deemed its subject "insufficiently non-existent."
Related Artifacts
Several subsidiary tools and documents exist in support of the Catalogus Primus. The Ledger of Temporary Holdings, as noted, serves as a preliminary register. The Index Primorum is a vellum copy of all floor names, updated weekly for portability. Most significant is the Scholia Primus, a separate stone stele that records the rationale for each major amendment, citing the relevant Concordance clauses and the presiding Scribe. The Scholia is itself catalogued on Floor 1, directly opposite the master ledger, creating what Scribe-Primus Aris termed "a dialogue in stone."
Integrity and Permanence
The physical and legal permanence of the Catalogus Primus is a cornerstone of Tower administration. The use of Sleeping Ink ensures entries cannot be erased, only stricken through with a formal cancellation line, which must itself be authorized. A stricken entry remains legible, preserving a complete audit trail. This integrity is why challenges to the ledger's authority, such as the Scribe-Primus's brief objection to Kael's classification of a whispered amendment, are ultimately unsuccessful. The ledger is not merely a record; it is, by Fourth Concordance precedent, the physical embodiment of the Tower's canonical truth.
