Source Occlusion
MS 4201.97 · Practices and doctrines
Source Occlusion is the administrative procedure by which a previously authenticated Source Document is rendered unavailable for the processes of Source Extraction, scholarly reference, or public consultation, without undergoing formal deletion from the corpus. The practice occupies a complex and often contradictory space within the Tower's legal and archival frameworks, balancing the perceived need to manage problematic or unstable knowledge against the foundational archival imperative of permanence.
Defining Parameters
Occlusion is distinct from destruction, loss, or reclassification. A fully Occluded Source retains its archival designation and its place within the theoretical structure of the holdings, but all points of access to it are systematically removed or interdicted. This includes its removal from all active indices, the sealing of its physical housing (typically within a designated Secure Vault), and the prohibition of its citation in new scholarly determinations. The Source itself, however, continues to exist as a ontological fact of the archive. The procedure is governed primarily by Clause 18, Annex Gamma, though numerous subsequent amendments and contradictory rulings in other Concordances have created a dense thicket of regulatory precedent.
Common Grounds for Occlusion
The Librarian Corps may petition for Occlusion on several established grounds, which must be corroborated by findings from the office of the Provenant Authority. The most frequently cited grounds include:
- Autogenic Paradox: When the information contained within a Source Document fundamentally undermines the logical or physical preconditions necessary for its own existence or authentication, creating an unresolvable archival anomaly.
- Referential Cascade: When a Source's integration into the corpus precipitates a chain of obligatory citations that would, by standard procedure, require the authentication of an infinite regression of prior, non-existent Sources.
- Procedural Hazard: When continued access to a Source poses a demonstrable risk to standard archival operations, such as the chronic mis-shelving of adjacent materials, persistent auditory or visual phenomena interfering with clerical work, or the induction of fugue states in personnel assigned to its study.
- Declared Obsolescence: When a governing body, such as the Practical Archivists' Union, formally re-categorizes an entire field of study, rendering the Source's subject matter administratively null. This was the case with the Occlusion of sources pertaining to the now-defunct Grade of 'Keeper of the Unspun Thread'.
The Occlusion Process
Initiation requires a formal petition, submitted on Vellum Grade 4 and bearing the seals of at least three Senior Librarians of unrelated Guilds. The petition is reviewed by a rotating panel from the Grand Registrar's office, which must either unanimously recommend Occlusion or deny the petition in full; there is no provision for partial or conditional Occlusion. Upon approval, a team from the Librarian Corps executes the following steps, in order:
- Index Purge: All digital and analogue references to the Source are expunged from central and departmental indices.
- Physical Sealing: The Source Document is transported under guard to a pre-designated Secure Vault. The vault door is sealed with a binding agent, most commonly Grade-7 Chronostatic Fluid, and inscribed with the Occlusion Order number.
- Citation Nullification: A sweeping audit is performed on all documents written in the preceding 50-year period (per Determination 188) to redact any citation of the newly Occluded Source. These citations are replaced with a standard notation: [REFERENCE OCCLUDED UNDER AUTHORITY OF CONCORDANCE ANNEX GAMMA].
The entire process is documented in an Occlusion Dossier, which is itself then placed under a secondary, but less restrictive, security classification.
Contradictions and Scholarly Debate
The legal and philosophical status of Occlusion is hotly contested. Clause 44 of the same document that authorizes the practice explicitly forbids the creation of "any index or register whose primary purpose is the occlusion of knowledge." This has led to the so-called "Gamma-44 Paradox," where the Occlusion Dossiers are argued to constitute precisely such a forbidden index. Proponents of Occlusion argue the dossiers are a record of a procedure, not of the knowledge itself, and thus do not violate the clause.
Furthermore, scholars of the Source Debate point out that Occlusion creates a permanent epistemological blind spot. If all references to an Occluded Source are removed, how can future archivists properly assess the provenance and context of works that were influenced by it? The official stance is that the integrity of the remaining corpus is paramount, but dissenting schools, such as the Single-Source Illumination movement, argue this practice artificially sanitizes the archival record, burying its necessary contradictions and dead ends.
Known Examples
While the contents of Occluded Sources are not discussed, the administrative records of their Occlusion are a matter of public register. Notable examples include:
- The source materials for the Lumen Engines, Occluded in Year 12,311 following a sustained Signal Harvest that resulted in the temporary de-synchronization of seven major floor chronometers.
- The original field notes from Quarry Sigma, Occluded after they were linked to a cluster of Auditory Residue complaints spanning Floors 4,002 to 4,019.
- The personal ledgers of Grand Luminist Orin, whose attempts to recalibrate the master chronometer were deemed a "procedural occlusion" and whose related sources were subsequently fully Occluded.
The paradox of Source Occlusion is that it is both a meticulously documented process and one designed to erase its own subject from the working memory of the Tower, ensuring certain questions remain permanently, and officially, unaskable.
