Auditory Residue
MS 7032.15 · Practices and doctrines
“Auditory Residue is the persistent presence of a sound whose source, purpose, and authorization for existence have been conclusively removed from the record.”
— Concordance 47 (Auditory Proscriptions), Clause 12.δ
Auditory Residue is a class of acoustic phenomenon catalogued under Auditory Anomalies, defined by its persistence beyond the decommissioning, retraction, or ontological revocation of its originating event or object. Unlike Regulatory Echoes, which are sanctioned and procedural, Auditory Residue is considered archival debris—sound without a current referent in the Tower’s active ledgers. Its management falls under the auspices of the Spire of Auditory Phantoms and is strictly governed by Concordance 89 ("Regulations Pertaining to Tonal Residue in Sub-Shelf 89.β").
Definition and Classification
Per the Thirty-Second Concordance, Annex G, a phenomenon is classified as Auditory Residue if it meets three criteria: it is auditorily perceptible to a certified Receiver; its source is listed in the Grand Ledger of Auditory Potential as "Archived-Indefinite" or "Source-Revoked"; and it fails to dissipate after three standard cycles of the Auditory Resonance Drill. Residue is further graded on the Rölff Scale (1-IX) based on its adhesion to local acoustics and its propensity to infect adjacent cataloguing systems. Grade I Residue may manifest as a faint hum behind a specific shelf, while Grade IX Residue has been known to overwrite the official acoustic profile of an entire reading room.
Protocols for Containment and Transfer
The initial containment of detected Residue is detailed in the Custodial Manual for Particulate Residue, Vol. IV, which, despite its title, dedicates Chapters 8 through 11 to "Non-Corporeal Particulates." Upon confirmation via Auditory Confirmation during an Auditory Phase, Residue is logged in the Vestibule's temporary registers and assigned a quarantine frequency. If the Residue cannot be reconciled with a newly sanctioned source within 72 hours, it is scheduled for transfer to the Silent Stacks via insulated sonic conduit. A controversial provision in Concordance 89.β.7 allows for the "temporary lodging" of high-grade Residue within the walls of the Spire of Auditory Phantoms itself, a practice critics argue merely relocates the problem upward.
The Chamber of Settled Dust
The final repository for Auditory Residue is the Chamber of Settled Dust, a hermetically sealed sub-level of the Silent Stacks. Transfer here is the last step outlined in the Custodial Manual for Particulate Residue, Vol. IV. The Chamber is not silent; it is instead a space where all residual sounds are allowed to interact and, theoretically, cancel one another out through destructive interference. The Chamber’s custodians, known as Dampeners, monitor these interactions. Deliberation on the final status of any given residue within the Chamber is a protracted process, also governed by the Custodial Manual, and outcomes are rarely communicated outside the department.
Controversies and Scholarly Disputes
The ontological status of Auditory Residue is a point of significant scholarly contention. The Formalist School, citing Concordance 47, argues that Residue is merely a procedural error—a sound that has outlived its paperwork and should be administratively terminated. The Residualists, drawing from obscure footnotes in Concordance 89, posit that Residue is the Tower’s "acoustic memory," and that purging it constitutes a form of archival amnesia. This debate has practical consequences: Residualist-aligned clerks have been known to secretly re-catalog certain residues as "Ambient Potential," thereby sparing them from deletion. These actions are technically a violation of Concordance 47 (Auditory Proscriptions), leading to periodic disciplinary hearings.
Notable Instances
The most documented instance is the "Lament of the Un-Shelved Glossary," a Grade VII Residue that manifested as a continuous whispering of alphabetized terms for which no entries could be found. It occupied Corridor 45-Δ for nearly a decade before a costly reconciliation procedure folded it into the general Ambient Regret of that sector. A more persistent case is the so-called "Indexer's Sigh," a low-grade Residue detected in multiple cataloguing halls, believed to be the accumulated, unattributed fatigue of generations of junior librarians. Despite numerous purge attempts, it periodically resurfaces, often measured as a slight drop in air pressure and a 0.5-decibel exhalation at 180 Hz.
