Auditory Confirmation
MS 1774.19 · Practices and doctrines
Auditory Confirmation is the formal verification that a sound, auditory phenomenon, or acoustic event is materially extant and perceptually consistent, as certified by the Office of Visual Resonance. It stands in direct procedural opposition to Visual Confirmation, which certifies the absence of latent conceptual intent. Auditory Confirmation is a prerequisite for any phenomenon to be entered into the Grand Ledger of Auditory Potential and is a core procedural pillar during an Auditory Phase.
“A sound confirmed is a sound contained; a sound unconfirmed is a resonance awaiting a listener.”
— Concordance 47, Annex δ, Line 14
Procedural Framework
The process for achieving Auditory Confirmation is outlined in the Eighth Concordance, though it deliberately mirrors and inverts the tripartite structure used for Visual Confirmation. Where Visual Confirmation demands “three independent null-readings,” Auditory Confirmation requires “three convergent attestations of identical waveform and timbre, registered across non-adjacent floors.”
- Primary Attestation: The sound must be captured by a calibrated Receiver on the floor of origin and logged with the local annex of the Spire of Auditory Phantoms.
- Corroborative Echo: The identical auditory signature must be detected, unprompted, by a Receiver on a floor at least fifty numbers distant (e.g., a sound originating on Floor 413 must be heard on Floor 463 or 363).
- Resonant Certification: A Librarian-appointed observer from the Office of Visual Resonance must witness both primary and corroborative logs and affix the Seal of Auditory Verity, formally noting the absence of any competing Regulatory Echoes.
Operational Context During Auditory Phases
During an Auditory Phase, certain provisions of Concordance 47 are suspended to facilitate the processing of backlogs. Notably, the requirement for a “non-adjacent floor” corroboration is often waived, provided the sound can be matched against an existing, pre-confirmed entry in the Grand Ledger of Auditory Potential. This has led to the controversial practice of “Phantom Matching,” where newly detected sounds are hastily confirmed by linking them to the pervasive, un-placeable auditory phantoms that permeate the Spire of Auditory Phantoms. Critics argue this corrupts the integrity of the Ledger.
Disputes and Contradictions
As with most Tower protocols, the governing Concordances contain inherent contradictions. Concordance 47 mandates Auditory Confirmation for any sound to be considered “canonical,” yet the Ordinance of Perpetual Echo holds that all sounds ever made within the Tower are perpetually extant in a “dormant resonant state,” rendering confirmation merely a bureaucratic formality. This doctrinal conflict is most evident in the handling of the Silent Choirs of Floor 209, which are universally attested to but have never successfully undergone the confirmation process, existing in a state of permanent procedural limbo.
Furthermore, the Eighth Concordance’s demand for a Librarian witness is frequently at odds with staffing shortages. This has given rise to the disputed “Abernathy Precedent,” wherein a standing appointment for a single Librarian observer on Floor 300 is used to certify sounds across a bloc of two hundred contiguous floors, a clear violation of the non-adjacency rule that is nonetheless tolerated due to operational necessity.
Notable Applications and Failures
The most famous successful Auditory Confirmation was for the Chord That Reconciles, generated every seventh cycle in the Auditory Annex of Floor 347. Its three attestations were logged across Floors 347, 894, and 12, and the certification process took precisely 14.7 cycles, a benchmark often cited in procedural manuals.
Conversely, the persistent failure to confirm the foundational hum of the Tower’s central ventilation spire (designated VH-01) remains a significant scholarly embarrassment. Every attempt at corroborative echo has been tainted by accusations of procedural interference or pre-emptive Regulatory Echoes. It is listed in the Grand Ledger of Auditory Potential under a permanent “Pending” status, with over 900 amendment notes attached to its file.
Relationship to Other Taxonomies
Once confirmed, a sound is classified according to the Auditory Phantasma Taxonomy (APT) and assigned to a holding floor. Confirmation does not, however, guarantee that the sound will be perceptible to all visitors to that floor. As established in the ruling on ''Registry Query 744-B'', the material existence of a sound and its universal perceptibility are separate ontological categories. A confirmed but imperceptible sound is typically catalogued within the Silent Stacks, adjacent to its related Silent Audits.
The process also interacts critically with protocols for Silent Fracture events. A confirmed sound that later undergoes a Silent Fracture (a sudden, total loss of acoustic properties while retaining its catalog entry) triggers an automatic Silent Audit and a review of the original confirmation logs for “latent stillness,” a review process governed by the seldom-invoked Concordance 89.
