It is less an information exchange and more a formalized ritual of inquiry and displacement, governed by a complex and often contradictory body of Concordances and Ordinances.

The process transforms a static subject of record into a dynamic participant in a procedural truth. As noted in the unpublished treatise On the Fluidity of Knowledge, "The value of a catalogued subject is not intrinsic to its filing location, but is generated by its movement and its consultation."

Forms of Consultation

Consultation manifests in several codified forms, each with distinct protocols and thresholds of authorization.

• Referential Consultation: The most common form, conducted at a standard Reference Desk where a patron’s inquiry is cross-checked against existing records. This form does not typically invoke the active properties of a holding.
