Source Extraction is the administrative and ontological procedure by which a subject is inducted into the holdings of The Tower. It establishes the subject's reality within the archival framework and generates the foundational documentation required for its subsequent cataloguing, cross-referencing, and maintenance.

Procedural Requirements

The protocol for Source Extraction is codified across several Concordances, most notably within Annex Γ of the Third Concordance, which details the "Requirements for Substantive Introduction." The core tenet, derived from the Doctrine of Proximate Authority, holds that a subject becomes real by virtue of its documented presence. Therefore, the act of Extraction is not one of discovery but of constitutive definition. The procedure requires a minimum of three certified Librarian witnesses, the completion of Form 7-Δ (Statement of Ontological Ingress), and the assignment of a provisional holding number, which precedes the often-arbitrary final floor assignment.

The Extraction Event

An Extraction Event is formally recorded as occurring at a specific datetime and on a specific, often temporary, procedural floor. The event itself is largely ceremonial, involving the ritual presentation of the subject's designated name and primary attributes to the witnessing Librarians. For physical objects, such as the Mourning Glass of the 44th Spire, this may involve an actual specimen. For abstract concepts, practices, or disputed entities, the "source" presented is often a representative artifact or a fully drafted descriptive scroll. The controversial introduction of Aethelred's Permanent Glow, for instance, was recorded as an Extraction Event where the submitted source was a sealed crate alleged to contain the fungal culture's "principle of luminescence."

Generative vs. Declarative Extraction

A principal schism in extraction theory concerns the nature of the source material. The Generativist School, which draws authority from the Fifth Concordance, argues that Extraction must involve a tangible, pre-existing source from which properties are drawn; the Tower's records are thus a reflection of external truth. This view is frequently cited in cases involving physical relics or archived documents like the Kettleman Copy. Conversely, the Declarative School, supported by clauses in the Third Concordance, posits that the act of documentation itself creates the source. From this perspective, the completion of Form 7-Δ is the generative act, and any accompanying physical object is merely a ceremonial placeholder. This debate remains unresolved, leading to practical inconsistencies in how holdings like the Department of Speculative Biology are maintained.

Post-Extraction Processing

Following a successful Extraction, the subject enters a phase of Provisional Reality. During this period, which typically lasts between 47 and 47,000 Tower hours (the variance itself being a subject of Registry dispute), the newly real entity is subject to intensive cross-referencing and paradox screening. Its attributes are checked against the Central Registry of Codified Law for contradictions, and its designated floor is negotiated (or imposed) by the Office of Numeral Reconciliation. A subject that fails to achieve stable cross-reference linkages after this period may be subject to a Reversion Order, though the procedural legality of such an order is hotly contested, as it implies the Tower can "un-make" a reality it has formally established.

Notable Controversies and Amendments

The history of Source Extraction is marked by corrective amendments. Today, Source Extraction remains the sole sanctioned method for expanding the Tower's holdings. All new floors, corridors, and catalogued phenomena originate from a recorded Extraction Event. The practice is overseen by the Department of Ontological Ingress, which maintains the Master Ledger of Extractions. However, the philosophical debate between Generativist and Declarative approaches continues to influence procedural minutiae, such as the required thickness of parchment for Form 7-Δ and the acceptable types of ink—disputes that are, invariably, settled by citation of conflicting Concordances.
