Metaphysical

MS 7066.36 · Practices and doctrines

Metaphysical, within the context of the Tower's classification system, is not a singular object or location but an overarching disciplinary designation. It denotes any phenomenon, property, or entity whose existence is contingent upon, or whose effects are primarily realized within, the Tower's own internal ontological framework. The term is the root of a complex administrative and scholarly ecosystem, most notably embodied by the Metaphysical School.

“The Metaphysical is the real that is not real; the archive’s shadow, cast by its own light.”
— Inscription above the lintel of the Department of Metaphysical Topology, Floor 74π

Commonly misattributed to the Third Concordance. Its origin is likely a marginal gloss by an unknown Archivist-Cartographer.

Definitional Parameters

An entry is deemed Metaphysical if it satisfies one or more of the criteria enumerated in Annex Omega of the Metaphysical Index (Clauses 12.α–12.θ). Core criteria include, but are not limited to: exhibiting properties that violate known physical laws outside the Tower (e.g., Photophobic Objects); being the subject of a validated Metaphysical Affidavit; requiring Metaphysical Calibration to maintain stability; or residing within a designated Metaphysical zone such as the Medical and Metaphysical Annex (M&M Annex). The final arbiter of classification is the Bureau of Metaphysical Proprietorship.

Jurisdictional Framework

The administration of Metaphysical matters is divided among several key bodies under the aegis of the Metaphysical School.

These bodies frequently engage in jurisdictional disputes, particularly regarding the classification of emergent phenomena, which are resolved by citation of (often contradictory) Concordances.

The Great Recalibration & Current Doctrine

The modern understanding of the Metaphysical was solidified during the period known as the Great Recalibration (Tower Year 14,822–14,831). Prior to this, the term was applied loosely to any anomaly or uncatalogued strangeness. The Recalibration established the principle of “internal consistency over external correspondence,” formalized in The Calibration Precedent. This precedent now underpins all Metaphysical Calibration protocols, asserting that an object’s reality within the Tower is sufficient for its classification, regardless of its status elsewhere.

A key doctrinal shift was the establishment of the Metaphysical Index as a tool for “measuring regulatory curvature in bureaucratic spaces.” This allowed for the quantification of administrative effort required to maintain a Metaphysical entry, a metric now central to resource allocation within the School.

Scholarly Disputes

Several unresolved debates persist within Metaphysical scholarship:

  1. The Proviso of Tangibility: A faction within the Department of Metaphysical Holdings, led by Undersecretary Aris, argues that all truly Metaphysical entities must have some form of tangible (or tangibly intangible) component. This group disputes the provisional classification of purely conceptual or auditory phenomena, such as those recorded in Vocalisations of Abstract Entities, Vol. XII, advocating for their reclassification as “Meta-Acoustic” or “Idea-Forms.”
  2. Cartel Influence: The degree to which the Metaphysical Cartel—a semi-legendary consortium of Archivists and Proprietors—influences calibration standards and the drafting of Annex Omega is a subject of intense but discreet speculation. No Concordance explicitly acknowledges the Cartel’s existence, yet references to “extra-procedural consensus” appear in several calibration logs.
  3. Calibration of Photophobic Objects: The Department of Metaphysical Holdings continues to advocate for a separate, attenuated calibration process for photophobic objects, arguing their instability under standard illumination protocols constitutes a unique metaphysical property. This is routinely opposed by the Office of the Metaphysical Curator on grounds of procedural uniformity.

Related Entries

The study and administration of the Metaphysical is inextricably linked to practices such as Cataloguing, Transition Oversight, and Stairwell Stewardship, as these operational functions often encounter and must manage Metaphysical phenomena. The Metaphysical Wings of the Tower are the physical manifestations of this bureaucratic and ontological expanse.
