Calibration
MS 7682.51 · Practices and doctrines
Calibration is the formal process of aligning the metaphysical, dimensional, and phenomenological parameters of a Tower space or artifact with a certified Calibration Standard. Governed by the principles established in The Calibration Precedent, it ensures that all catalogued subjects maintain their defined properties and do not impinge upon the structural integrity of adjacent floors or holdings. The ultimate authority for the practice rests with the Calibration Oversight Committee, though daily administration is executed by the Provosts of Calibration.
Jurisdictional Framework
Calibration is not a singular act but a suite of procedures classified under distinct ordinances. Metaphysical Calibration, which concerns the stability of abstract properties, falls under Stairwell Calibration Ordinance 1-A. Dimensional Calibration, regulating spatial fidelity and adjacency, is covered by Ordinance 44-B. Phenomenological Calibration, ensuring sensory and experiential consistency, is detailed in Ordinance 44-E. A further subset, Local Calibration, applies to minor, intra-floor adjustments and is authorized under the provisions of Concordance 711, Clause 18. Disputes regarding jurisdictional overlap are typically resolved by reference to The Calibration Precedent (Registry Case M-44-Ω), though the Provosts of Calibration retain discretionary power to authorize, suspend, or modify any calibration event.
Standard Protocols and Apparatus
All calibration must be performed using apparatus certified under Stairwell Calibration Ordinance 44-E. This typically involves a theodolite of metaphysical inclination, a set of tessellated resonance plates, and a fogging apparatus for revealing dimensional stress fractures. The instruments require biannual recertification at the Guild of Exactitude's Calibration Annex. The standard protocol, as amended following the Incident of the Fogged Calibration, mandates a three-phase process:
- Baseline Verification: The existing parameters are measured against the archived Calibration Standard for the subject.
- Resonance Alignment: Using the principles of Resonance Calibration, the subject's fundamental frequencies are tuned to harmonize with the Tower's ambient ontological field.
- Cartographic Lock: Final coordinates are logged and sealed within the Chamber of Cartographic Calibration, binding the subject to its assigned location.
Diagram 711-α, held by the Office of Stairwell Calibration, illustrates the approved layout for a Calibration Atrium, such as the one on Floor 711.
Classification of Calibration Sites
The Office of Stairwell Calibration classifies all calibration sites into designated groups. For example, Stairwell Omega-7 is classified under Calibration Group Omega-V, indicating it requires quarterly dimensional stability checks due to its proximity to several un-catalogued voids. The classification determines the frequency, depth, and required oversight level for all calibration activities at that site. A full registry of classifications is maintained in Annex Δ of the Stairwell Calibration Ordinance.
Scholarly Disputes and Interpretative Challenges
The field is not without controversy. A primary scholarly dispute centers on whether calibration discovers or imposes a subject's true state. The Formalist School, citing Concordance 44, argues calibration merely reveals pre-existing alignments. The Constructivist School, referencing the contradictory Clause 22 of the same Concordance, contends that the act of calibration is constitutive, solidifying a subject's properties which would otherwise remain in flux. This debate has practical implications; the Constructivist position was informally adopted by the OSC during the Incident of the Fogged Calibration to justify a post-hoc realignment of the Calibration Atrium's spectral boundaries.
Furthermore, the applicability of Local Calibration protocols to phenomena that are inherently non-local, such as certain recursive echoes or pervasive melancholies, remains an open question before the Provosts. No ruling has been issued, leading to a patchwork of regional practices.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
A space or artifact that falls out of calibration poses a systemic risk. Documented effects include perceptual bleed-through between floors, temporal dilations within stairwells, and the gradual "softening" of archival records. Re-calibration of a severely misaligned subject is a major undertaking requiring a full session of the Calibration Oversight Committee and often the temporary evacuation of adjacent floors. The Provosts maintain a schedule of routine calibrations precisely to avoid such resource-intensive emergencies.
