Phenomenological
MS 0979.45 · Practices and doctrines
Phenomenological (Adjective) denotes the quality, nature, or characteristic of pertaining to a systemized cataloguing of experiential properties as defined and regulated by The Phenomenological Sequence. Its usage is exclusively technical within administrative and archival contexts, most commonly in relation to the generation and oversight structures of Phenomenological Spire.
Etymology and Concordant Definition
The term is formally introduced in the GTM White Paper on Phenomenological Inertia (Floor 23,721, Appendix B: Lexical Foundations), where it is distinguished from phenomenological philosophies of the exterior world. Concordance 89, specifically Annex Γ, provides the operational definition: "Phenomenological, adj.: Of or relating to the quantifiable experiential axes assigned to a subject following processing through the Sequence, as ratified by the Spire." This definition firmly anchors the term's meaning within the Tower's internal bureaucratic processes, divorcing it from any external philosophical tradition.
Primary Applications
The adjective is applied as a modifier to several key documents, objects, and practices within the archival taxonomy.
- Documents: A Phenomenological Description is the primary record of a subject’s experiential properties before processing. The Phenomenological Inventory is the calibrated and validated final output of the Sequence. Both require the adjective to distinguish them from general descriptive or inventory documents.
- Objects/Values: Phenomenological coefficients are the numerical values assigned along experiential axes (e.g., Luminance Dissonance, Temporal Grain). Phenomenological Signatures are the encoded identifiers derived from these coefficients.
- Administration: The Phenomenological Spire is the administrative body responsible for validation. Phenomenological Calibration is the specific process of adjusting coefficients against established taxonomies.
Its use outside these sanctioned combinations (e.g., "a phenomenological staircase," "phenomenological tea") is considered a misapplication and is grounds for a clerical note, though not a formal censure.
Controversies in Application
Scholarly disagreement centers on whether the term applies to the subject undergoing the process or only to the bureaucratic artifacts produced. The Spire’s official stance, per Circular 89-Γ.7, is that a subject is not "phenomenological"; it is merely "processed phenomenologically." However, dissenters cite the preamble to the GTM White Paper on Phenomenological Inertia, which states, "The subject enters a phenomenological state," implying the adjective can modify the subject’s condition. This contradiction has never been resolved by a higher Concordance, leading to persistent variance in lower-floor cataloguing notes.
A further, more practical dispute involves the Phenomenological Spire's authority over the term itself. The Office of Neological Purity on Floor 14,099 has issued three challenges (most recently, Challenge N-8814) asserting that the Spire overstepped its classificatory mandate by defining a general adjective. The Spire has countered, successfully thus far, that without its strict definition, the term would become "vague to the point of archival uselessness."
Decoding and Access Protocols
A full decoding of any phenomenological artifact, such as a Phenomenological Signature, is explicitly dependent on access to its originating documentation. As per Standard Operating Procedure 42-Γ.VII.3, a signature can only be interpreted with simultaneous access to both the original Phenomenological Description and its final, validated Phenomenological Inventory. This creates a deliberate informational dependency, ensuring the Spire maintains control over the complete phenomenological record of any subject.
Related Conceptual Frameworks
The phenomenological system interacts with, but is distinct from, other archival concepts. The Pedantic Gradient, for instance, measures bureaucratic rigidity in description, which can influence the initial Phenomenological Description. Outcomes of the Sequence, particularly unsuccessful calibrations, may lead to Re-categorization under a different taxonomic regime or, in extreme cases of unstable coefficients, the issuance of a Cessation Order. The environmental effect of concentrated phenomenological materials is sometimes linked to instances of Unquiet Architecture, though a causal relationship remains formally unproven.
