Phenomenological Inventory
MS 6813.40 · Practices and doctrines
Phenomenological Inventory refers to the complete, calibrated set of Phenomenological coefficients ascribed to a single non-existent subject within the Tower’s archives, following its passage through The Phenomenological Sequence and final validation by the Phenomenological Spire. It serves as the definitive, quantitative summary of a subject's experiential properties, distinct from the qualitative narrative of its Phenomenological Description and the administrative record of its Inventory. Per Concordance 89 (Phenomenological Taxonomies), a validated Phenomenological Inventory is the only form in which a subject may be formally cited in cross-referential scholarly work.
Structure and Composition
A standard Phenomenological Inventory is a table of no fewer than seven and no more than forty-seven coefficients, each representing a quantifiable experiential axis. These axes are defined in Annex Γ of Concordance 89 (Phenomenological Taxonomies). Common primary coefficients include Luminance Echo (ambient light recall), Tactile Resonance (lingering haptic impression), and Chronal Dissonance (perceived deviation from standard temporal flow). Secondary coefficients, such as Odour Gradient and Phonemic Bleed, require specialized apparatus to measure and are only applied following a successful Phenomenological Calibration cycle.
The inventory is prefaced by a header containing the subject’s formal designation, its archival location (e.g., Shelf-Mark, Aperture, and Spiral), the date of final validation, and the seal of the presiding Spire Archivist. The body presents coefficients in descending order of phenomenological inertia, as per the methodology outlined in the GTM White Paper on Phenomenological Inertia.
Generation and Validation Protocol
The inventory is generated during Stage Three of The Phenomenological Sequence, where Measurer-Scribes extract raw quantitative values from the subject’s approved Description. These raw values undergo initial calibration, a process detailed in Ordinance 44-E, to ensure sensory consistency across observers. The provisional inventory is then submitted to the Phenomenological Spire for review.
The Spire’s validation involves a final check against the taxonomical frameworks of Concordance 89 (Phenological Taxonomies) and a cross-reference with the Bureau of Static Inventory to ensure the proposed coefficients do not conflict with those of any proximally catalogued subject. A conflict, such as two non-adjacent subjects sharing identical Auditory Shadow coefficients, triggers a mandatory re-calibration. Only upon the Spire’s imprimatur does the inventory move from the Inventory of Proposed Holdings to the active archival record.
Function and Archival Role
The primary function of the Phenomenological Inventory is to render the qualitative "aboutness" of a non-existent subject into a stable, interoperable data set. This allows for:
- The algorithmic sorting and retrieval of subjects based on experiential similarity (e.g., retrieving all subjects with a high Oneiric Weight coefficient).
- The formal reconciliation of contradictory accounts of the same subject, by comparing coefficient variances.
- The provision of a concise reference for scholars, superseding the often-voluminous original Description.
It is crucial to distinguish the Phenomenological Inventory from the general Inventory. The latter is a logistical record of a subject’s physical (though non-existent) location and custody chain within the Tower. The former is a purely abstract record of its experiential essence. A subject may have an Inventory entry without a Phenomenological Inventory (if it is newly acquired and not yet processed), but it cannot have a validated Phenomenological Inventory without being entered into the general Inventory.
Disputes and Anomalies
Scholarly disagreement often centers on the interpretation of coefficient drift. The school following Elara of the Dusted Stacks maintains that coefficients are immutable once validated, and any perceived change indicates a clerical error in the original measurement. The rival Temporal Flux school argues that certain subjects, particularly those catalogued under high-numbered floors, exhibit legitimate coefficient decay or amplification over time, necessitating periodic re-inventory—a costly and controversial proposal.
Notable anomalies include the The Self-Excluding Inventory (PA-882), a Phenomenological Inventory whose coefficients, when observed, recursively alter to negate the act of observation, and several inventories catalogued in the Inventory of Superfluous Supports which consist entirely of null-value coefficients, describing subjects defined solely by their experiential absence.
Related Documents and Protocols
The generation and maintenance of Phenomenological Inventories are governed by a complex web of ordinances. Key among these are the protocols for Proxy Inventory Maintenance, used when a subject is too phenomenologically volatile for direct measurement, and the Inventory and Quarantine Protocols, which mandate the isolation of subjects whose coefficients show uncontrolled variance. All blank inventory forms are catalogued in the Inventory of Minor Furnishings, Vol. 44, under a separate sub-spiral.
