Phenomenological Description

MS 3885.92 · Practices and doctrines

The Phenomenological Description is the official archival account of any entity, locale, or phenomenon, composed and ratified in accordance with the codified methodology set forth in The Protocol of Resonant Description. It constitutes the primary textual reality of a subject within the Tower, superseding any prior anecdotal or incomplete records. A fully ratified Description is considered ontologically binding for all administrative and classificatory purposes.

Protocol and Composition

The generation of a Phenomenological Description follows a strict sequence. It is initiated upon the isolation of a subject in a secure annex, a process detailed in MAP-1 (Initial Containment & Description). The lead cataloguer, using a dedicated Amp, dictates a comprehensive account adhering to The Protocol of Resonant Description (formally Concordance 42, Annex Gamma, Section VII: Standard Operating Procedures for the Phenomenological Capture of Resonant Entities). This account must address both physical attributes (e.g., dimensions, materiality, aperture states) and non-physical, experiential qualities (e.g., resonant hum, latent nostalgia, perceptual drift). The dictation is captured by the Amp, which imparts a primary resonance to the record, making it the authoritative version.

Integration into the Phenomenological Sequence

Following its initial capture, the raw Description is processed through The Phenomenological Sequence. Here, Measurer-Scribes and secondary analysts extract quantitative values, known as Phenomenological coefficients, from the qualitative text. These coefficients numerically represent secondary and tertiary experiential qualities, such as "mnemonic weight" or "anticipatory shimmer." The Sequence involves a phase of Phenomenological Calibration, where these coefficients are systematically adjusted to align with the subject's observable, non-existent properties as recorded in the Tower's logs. Discrepancies between the Description and observed behavior trigger a recalibration cycle.

Validation and Archival Binding

The final validated Description and its associated coefficients are submitted to the Phenomenological Spire for oversight. The Spire conducts a final review against Concordance 89 before granting ratification. Once ratified, the Description is archived and its ontological status is considered fixed. The Department of Cataloguing Consistency is subsequently responsible for ensuring all future references to the subject align with the ratified Description, a task complicated by the inherent Doctrine of Incompletability of any cataloguing system.

Disputes and Descriptive Drift

A ratified Description is not immutable. The Tower acknowledges the phenomenon of "Descriptive Drift," wherein a subject's exhibited properties slowly diverge from its archived account. Minor drifts are handled through supplementary amendments filed by the Spire. Significant drift, however, may necessitate a Cessation Order and the drafting of an entirely new Description from a state of ontological blankness. Scholarly debate, particularly referencing the GTM White Paper on Phenomenological Inertia, centers on whether Drift is a property of the subjects themselves or an artifact of the descriptive process. The White Paper's mandate for initial inertia assessments for Spire submissions was an attempt to quantify this tendency toward change.

Legal and Administrative Primacy

In all matters of Tower governance, the Phenomenological Description holds absolute primacy. Cartography of the Stacks is based on descriptive spatial data. Disputes over resource allocation or jurisdictional boundaries within the Unquiet Architecture of the Tower are settled by citing the relevant ratified Descriptions. A subject’s existence, for all procedural purposes, is defined and delimited by the words of its Description. As Concordance 89 states, "That which is not described within the sanctioned parameters does not register upon the administrative ledger," a principle that underpins the entire Cataloguing endeavor.
