Metaphysical Affidavit
MS 5207.47 · Documents and ordinances
A Metaphysical Affidavit is a certified statement, executed under penalty of perjury within the definitions of Concordance 12, that attests to the ontological readiness and procedural legitimacy of an entity, concept, or event prior to its formal inclusion in the Tower’s holdings. It serves as the foundational epistemological warrant, distinguishing mere proposed entries from those deemed “archive-ready” by the standards of the Metaphysical School. The affidavit’s issuance concludes the phase of Metaphysical Calibration and initiates the administrative process of accessioning, typically finalized by the ratification of a Scriptorium Affidavit.
Form and Function
Standardized under Annex Omega of the Metaphysical Index, the Metaphysical Affidavit is a tripartite document comprising the Statement of Ontic Coherence, the Attestation of Causal Fidelity, and the Warranty of Non-Contradiction. Each section must be endorsed by a certified Primary Witness from the Department of Metaphysical Topology and notarized by the Office of the Metaphysical Curator. The document’s physical form varies; for stable, persistent entities, it is inscribed on vellum treated with axiomatic fixative, while for transient or probabilistic phenomena, it may be recorded as a resonant frequency within a calibration crystal housed in the Metaphysical Wings.
Its primary function is to bridge the procedural gap between Metaphysical Calibration and archival inclusion. Per Clause 4.7, no subject may be assigned a permanent shelf location without a duly executed Metaphysical Affidavit on file. This prevents the accidental cataloguing of “ontic phantoms” or “epistemic static,” which are relegated to provisional holding annexes.
Jurisdictional Authority and Drafting
The authority to solicit and validate a Metaphysical Affidavit resides with the Bureau of Metaphysical Proprietorship, operating under the auspices of the Metaphysical School. Drafting is typically the responsibility of the petitioning Metaphysical Cartel or proprietorship, though templates are provided in Form Ω-7A. The Bureau’s review focuses on the affidavit’s internal consistency with the existing Metaphysical Index and its adherence to the principles outlined in the Seventh Concordance.
Disputes over an affidavit’s validity are adjudicated by the Department of Metaphysical Topology, whose findings can mandate a return to the calibration phase. A rejected affidavit is stamped with a Scriptorium Affidavit of Terminal Exhaustion, at which point the subject is usually remanded to a Dormitory Vault pending a recalibration cycle.
The Oath of Perjurious Intent
The signatory—often the lead metaphysician of the petitioning body—swears the Oath of Perjurious Intent, a legally binding declaration that the contents of the affidavit are “ontologically true to the best of the signatory’s calibrated understanding.” The oath’s power derives from Concordance 12, which defines perjury in the metaphysical context as “the deliberate assertion of an ontic state known to be in discord with the prevailing resonant framework of the affected wings.” Penalties for metaphysical perjury are severe, ranging from temporary suspension of proprietorship rights to permanent reassignment to Stairwell Stewardship duties on non-sequential floors.
Relation to Other Documents
The Metaphysical Affidavit is frequently conflated with, but is distinct from, several other key instruments:
- Scriptorium Affidavit: A Metaphysical Affidavit certifies ontological readiness; a Scriptorium Affidavit certifies that all administrative prerequisites for filing (such as the Affidavit of Epistemological Readiness for Form M-7b (Rev.)) have been met.
- Affidavit of Epistemological Readiness: This is a lower-order document, often a prerequisite for beginning the metaphysical calibration process that culminates in the Metaphysical Affidavit.
- Annex Omega Document: This is the governing statute within the Metaphysical Index that defines the affidavit’s structure; the affidavit itself is an instance of that document type.
The affidavit also serves as the key input for the Transition Oversight Committee when managing the transfer of a holding between metaphysical wings.
Notable Controversies and Disputes
The most persistent scholarly debate concerns the affidavit’s efficacy regarding “retroactive entities”—phenomena claimed to have always existed but only recently discovered. The Department of Metaphysical Holdings maintains that a contemporary affidavit can cover such entities if the Statement of Ontic Coherence can demonstrate a continuous, unbroken causal thread. A rival faction within the Metaphysical School, citing Concordance 41, argues this constitutes a forgery, as the requisite Primary Witness could not have been present at the entity’s purported origin. This dispute has left several floors, including the famed Gallery of Unspoken Saints, in a state of provisional classification for centuries.
A further procedural controversy, known as the “Omega Loop,” arises when the subject of a Metaphysical Affidavit is the affidavit process itself. Attempts to file such meta-affidavits have resulted in recursive calibration failures and are currently prohibited under a standing moratorium issued by the Office of the Metaphysical Curator.
