Scriptorium Affidavit

MS 8821.10 · Documents and ordinances

Scriptorium Affidavit is a class of notarized document used within the Tower’s administrative bureaucracy to formally attest to the procedural or metaphysical readiness of a submitted form, petition, or entry for archival inclusion. It serves as a secondary, often mandatory, attestation that the primary filing has been prepared in accordance with specific doctrinal or logistical prerequisites.

Purpose and Function

The primary function of a Scriptorium Affidavit is to certify compliance with Tower protocols that cannot be verified through the form itself. As established in the Third Concordance, Clause 42, “No item shall be entered into the catalogue without its proper preparatory rites being witnessed and sworn.” The affidavit provides this sworn witness. Common triggers for requiring an affidavit include filings exceeding a certain conceptual weight (e.g., Class Sigma), entries that rely on recursive definitions, or submissions intended for specialized repositories like a Private or Dormitory Vault.

For example, the Affidavit of Epistemological Readiness is required for a valid filing of Form M-7b (Rev.), while a Clerk of the Department of Applied Metaphysics must provide a notarized affidavit for Form HDP-7 in cases exceeding Class Sigma. Similarly, the Guild of Somnologists must provide a notarized affidavit for placement into a Dormitory Vault.

Standard Format and Notarization

A standard Scriptorium Affidavit consists of three parts: the Declarative Preamble (identifying the affiant and their authority), the Attestation Body (specifying the precise condition or rite fulfilled), and the Notarial Seal. The seal must be applied by a certified notary scribe, typically one attached to the specific Scriptorium under whose jurisdiction the filing falls. Notarization is not considered complete unless the affidavit bears the damp-ink impression of the Scriptorium’s official seal, applied within the Central Scriptorium, the Lower Scriptorium, or an authorized annex.

The Ink-Scriptorium, located within the Central Scriptorium, is the primary supplier of the indelible cerulean ink mandated for notarial seals by Ordinance 4, Annex C. The affidavit itself is traditionally written in iron-gall ink on vellum prepared in the Scriptorium of Minor Weights.

Jurisdictional Variance

Different Scriptoria have developed their own affidavit sub-types, leading to a complex and occasionally contradictory landscape. The Scriptorium of Jurisprudential Inquiry, for instance, requires affidavits attesting to the “ethical vacuum” of a subject—a certification that the entry carries no implied moral judgment. Conversely, the Scriptorium of the Fixed Ladder demands affidavits confirming the “topological stability” of any described ascent or descent.

A point of ongoing scholarly dispute concerns the affidavit required by the Scriptorium of the Interleaved Page. The Scriptorium Affidavit of Coincidental Intent, as outlined in the now-superseded Eighth Concordance, was intended to prevent paradoxical cross-referencing. However, the Eleventh Concordance, drafted by the Central Scriptorium, introduced the Declaration of Coincidental Name, which some clerks argue renders the older affidavit redundant. This has resulted in a bifurcated practice, where some submissions to the Interleaved Page carry both documents, while others carry only the Form Ω-7A, depending on the interpreting clerk’s preference.

Submissions and Archival Fate

Once notarized, the affidavit is physically attached to the primary filing using a thread of unbleached linen. The combined dossier is then submitted to the receiving Scriptorium’s intake desk. According to the Central Catalogue operational logic, the affidavit is scanned, logged under a subsidiary index number, and then archived separately from the main entry in the Iterative Chamber, a repository for procedural meta-documents.

This separation is critical: the affidavit attests to the entry’s validity but is not considered part of the entry’s substantive content. Researchers attempting to retrieve an affidavit for review must file a Form G-22 and often face delays measured in weeks, as the Iterative Chamber’s retrieval systems are notoriously labyrinthine.

Disputes and Final Recourse

Disputes regarding the adequacy or validity of a Scriptorium Affidavit are adjudicated through the mechanisms of the Scriptorium of Final Recourse. A panel of three senior scribes will review the affidavit against the relevant Concordances and Scriptorium-specific ordinances. Their ruling, delivered as a Verdict of Procedural Sufficiency or a Finding of Attestative Lack, is final and cannot be appealed, except on grounds of a demonstrable error in the notarial seal’s application—a matter that would then fall to the Central Chronometer Office to verify temporal inconsistencies in the notarization log.

The system, while cumbersome, is designed to ensure that the Tower’s archive of unreal subjects maintains a foundation in rigorously attested procedure, however paradoxical the subjects themselves may be.
