Destination Floor
MS 5478.47 · Practices and doctrines
Destination Floor denotes a terminal coordinate in a validated routing operation within the Tower, defined as the archival level where a subject or material transfer is formally recorded as concluding. It is distinct from a point of transit, interim staging area, or theoretical terminus. The correct identification and verification of a Destination Floor is a core competency of Routing and is governed by the Third Concordance, Seventh Concordance, and a complex lattice of procedural amendments.
Definition and Certification
The status of Destination Floor is not inherent to a floor's number or designation; it is conferred through the completion of a routing cycle. According to Clause 47 of the Third Concordance, "A floor becomes a destination upon the application of the Arrival Sigil and the filing of a Form L-29 'Manifest of Arrival'" by the Receiving Registrar. This formalizes the transition of an entity from a state of motion to a state of archival residence. Floors frequently serve as destinations for specific classes of material: for instance, Floor 404 is a common destination for subjects under Temporary Relocation, while the Silent Index is the designated destination for decommissioned Incomplete Histories.
Verification Protocols
Prior to any descent or ascent, proposed destination coordinates must be verified against the active Matriculation Ledger and cross-referenced with obstruction notices posted by the Clerks of the Gradient. Unverified destinations, such as the disputed annex on Floor 712, risk triggering a Perpetual State, wherein the subject's journey lacks a juridically recognized conclusion. Verification typically requires triplicate Circulation Slips quantifying origin-volume, destination-volume, and route-fidelity with a deviation tolerance of no more than 0.02%. The Desk of Lateral Correspondence processes transfers where the destination is a Lateral Annex, a specialized class of terminus.
Anomalous and Provisional Destinations
Not all destinations are fixed locales. The Chord of Reconciliation is recognized as a valid, non-material Destination Floor for subjects with an Intent of Motion but an undefined terminus, serving as a theoretical holding pattern. Similarly, the Vestibule of Provisional Tenancy on Floor 412 operates as a destination for materials under review, as detailed in Provisional Protocol Summaries. The Pending Resolution Vault on Floor 47 is a destination not for objects, but for unresolved inquiries and contested logics, which are considered to have "arrived" at a state of bureaucratic suspension.
Disputes and Contradictions
Scholar-Cartographers of the Central Archive remain divided on whether a Destination Floor must be physically distinct from an Origin Floor. The Seventh Concordance, Amendment 12, states that "a point of departure cannot be its own destination, except under conditions of recursive inventory." However, the Third Concordance, in a seldom-cited appendix, permits self-referential routing for materials undergoing "ontological recalibration," citing the closed-loop systems of Spiral 719. This contradiction is most apparent in the handling of Echo-derived materials, which may be destined for the Chamber of Echoed Inquiry, a site some argue is not a true floor but a condition of inquiry itself.
Documentation and Sigils
The act of arrival is marked by two inseparable actions: the physical application of the Arrival Sigil (a complex glyph attesting to the route's fidelity and the subject's integrity) and the bureaucratic completion of Form L-29. The Form L-29 must be filed in triplicate, with one copy remaining at the destination, one forwarded to the origin floor's registrar, and one deposited into the migratory annex of the Central Archive. Failure to complete both actions results in the destination being classified as "unrealized," and the subject may be administratively reverted to its last verified location, such as Floor 188 or the approach spiral from Unnumbered Aperture Gamma-7 near Floor 7,301.
Notable Designated Destination Floors
- Floor 451: Primary destination for deprecated illumination protocols.
- Quiet Forge (Floor 888)]]: Sole destination for Curators undergoing the Silent Cypress protocol.
- Floor 113: Destination for acoustical anomalies exceeding 19 kilohertz.
- The Tower: As per Clause 1, the Tower itself is the catch-all destination for "anomalous, incomplete, or jurisdictionally ambiguous submissions," making it the ultimate, if circular, Destination Floor for all unresolved routing.
