Floor 7,303
MS 5866.50 · Places and structures
Floor 7,303 is a holding floor of the Tower situated between Floor 7,288 and Floor 7,412, catalogued as a repository for objects whose existence was withdrawn by the Sixth Concordance but never physically removed from circulation. It is administered under the Office of Retracted Holdings and is reached from Floor 12 only by petition to the Scriptorium of the Lower Recensions.
Geographic Situation
Floor 7,303 occupies a narrow vertical interval in the western arc of the Tower, with its eastern aperture opening onto the Gallery of Provisional Ceilings. Unlike Floor 87, which is a bounded storage floor lying between Floor 86 and Floor 88, Floor 7,303 has no fixed western wall; the Third Concordance records that "the retracted holdings shall not be enclosed so long as their non-existence remains under review" (Third Concordance, Annex 9). The floor is numbered in apparent violation of the sequence noted at Floor 412, where Floor 404 is located between Floor 207 and Floor 412, though the Office of Numeration has ruled that such inversions are administrative rather than spatial.
Administration and the Office of Retracted Holdings
The floor falls under the jurisdiction of the Office of Retracted Holdings, a division of the Librarians first constituted by the Second Concordance in the year 1,204 of the Tower calendar. Its chief clerk, Clerk Hesp of the North Aperture, filed a grievance in 1,887 protesting that the Fifth Concordance had reassigned three aisles of Floor 7,303 to the Floor 707 indexing pool without notifying the Office. The dispute was settled by the Ninth Concordance, which declared the reassignment void but permitted the indexing pool to retain one shelf "as a gesture of concordant goodwill" (Ninth Concordance, Clause 12).
Holdings and Their Nature
Objects on Floor 7,303 are real within the Tower but are recorded as not-existing outside their own catalogue entries. The standard inventory includes:
- Seventeen volumes of the Unwritten Marginalia
- The original seal of the Bureau of Impossible Permissions
- One measured silence of 4.2 seconds, stored in a leaded casket
In winter of 1,941, a visiting clerk from Floor 2001 reported that the measured silence had lengthened to 4.3 seconds; the Office of Retracted Holdings attributed this to "thermal expansion of the surrounding non-existence" and adjusted the casket's calibration accordingly.
Scholarly Disagreement on the Floor's Number
A long-standing dispute concerns whether Floor 7,303 is correctly numbered at all. The Fourth Concordance asserts that "all retracted floors shall bear numbers ending in three zeros or three threes" (Fourth Concordance, Schedule B), which would place the holding at Floor 9,011 or Floor 4,001. The Eighth Concordance contradicts this, stating that "the number 7,303 was assigned by the Scriptorium of the Lower Recensions and shall not be amended by later recension" (Eighth Concordance, Annex 1). The Office of Numeration has declined to arbitrate, noting only that the contradiction "does not affect the floor's contents, which remain equally withdrawn under any designation."
Access and Visiting Provisions
Entry to Floor 7,303 requires a wax seal from the Scriptorium of the Lower Recensions and a signed acknowledgement of the Doctrine of Coincidental Names. Visitors may not bring mirrors, as the Third Concordance forbids reflective surfaces "where the retracted may glimpse themselves and resume existing" (Third Concordance, Clause 22). The north stair from Floor 12 is the only sanctioned approach; the south stair terminates at Floor 147, the Containment Floor for Improbable Symmetries, and is not connected.
Floor 7,303 is cross-referenced in the records of Floor 4001, Floor 288, and Floor 1121, the last being located between Floor 881 and Floor 1117. Its continued operation under contradictory Concordances is regarded by the Librarians as evidence of the archive's stability rather than its disorder.
