Floor 407: The Gallery of Unseen Portraits
MS 3764.01 · Places and structures
Floor 407: The Gallery of Unseen Portraits is a curated annex, formally designated under the Third Concordance (Clause 12.7.δ), dedicated to the cataloguing of portraits whose subjects have never been, and by the logic of the Tower cannot be, directly observed. It is distinct from, though operationally linked to, Floor 11,507 (The Gallery of Unfinished Portraits), which concerns portraits of unidentified but hypothetically visible subjects.
Conceptual Foundation
The Gallery's founding principle, as articulated in the Treatise on Representational Absence by Hieronimus of the Grey Stacks, posits that a portrait is defined not by the existence of its subject, but by the intent to depict. Floor 407 therefore archives the artistic output of that intent where the referent is categorically unseen. This includes portraits of entities such as the sound of a forgotten language, the shape of a silence in a specific corridor, or the facial features of a character in a book that was burned before publication. The Gallery operates under the administrative oversight of The Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers, which also manages The Aviary of Unseen Birds.
Physical Layout and Curation
The floor is arranged as a series of radially extending, dimly lit corridors known as "Vistas." Each Vista is dedicated to a class of unseen subject, as per the Taxonomy of Invisibilia (Appendix Γ). Portraits are not hung on walls but are stored within hermetically sealed viewing cabinets illuminated by a single, unflickering lumen-sphere. A portrait's metadata—including the artist's inferred name, the proposed medium, and the ontological category of the unseen subject—is inscribed on a brass plaque. Notably, the frames are often more detailed than the portraits themselves, some being intricate masterworks of joinery and inlay credited to the Guild of Metaphorical Cartographers.
A significant sub-annex, the Vestibule of Provisional Tenancy, handles portraits in a state of liminal visibility, where the subject's unseen status is under review. This Vestibule issues Subject Claim Vouchers to petitioners who believe they have perceived the subject elsewhere in the Tower, initiating a transfer process to Floor 11,507.
Notable Holdings
- Portrait of the First Librarian's Shadow, Cast by an Extinguished Candle (Vista III, Cabinet 404). A charcoal sketch on vellum, notable for its precise annotation of a date (14th of Gammon, 712) and a temperature (17.3 degrees Tower Standard) at which the shadow was purportedly cast.
- The Forty-Seven Moods of the Door That Isn't There (Vista VII, Cabinets 100-146). A sequential series of miniature portraits in lacquer, allegedly depicting the emotional states of a non-existent aperture reported near Floor 22 (The Whispering Gallery).
- Collective Likeness of the Judges of the Court of Unseen Precedents (Vista I, Central Rotunda). An empty, gilded frame surrounding a pane of perfectly clear, non-reflective glass. Its placard simply reads: "In Session."
Procedural and Jurisdictional Disputes
The Gallery is a frequent site of procedural contention. The primary scholarly dispute concerns the "Criterion of Inferential Sight." The Strict Constructionists, citing Concordance V, Amendment 9, argue that a subject is only truly "unseen" if its very category precludes visual perception (e.g., an abstract concept). The Contextualists, drawing precedent from rulings in the Court of Unseen Precedents, maintain that any subject not directly witnessed by a certified Tower Observer qualifies, even if it is theoretically visible (e.g., a person standing perpetually just around a corner). This debate directly impacts accession policies and the flow of portraits to and from the Vault of Unfinished Business.
Furthermore, there is an unresolved jurisdictional overlap with The Whispering Gallery of Floor Ξ-12 regarding portraits of unheard sounds, which both claim under their respective mandates of "unseen" and "whispered" phenomena. A standing committee, the Panel on Synesthetic Cataloguing, has been in continuous session since 934 without issuing a definitive ruling.
Administrative Status
Floor 407 is currently listed in the Central Registry as being in a state of "Perpetual Provisional Cataloguing," a designation it has held since its formal establishment in 702. Its head curator is an appointed position, but the title has been vacant since the disappearance of Curator Althea in 801, who allegedly entered a portrait to "consult the subject." Day-to-day operations are managed by a rotating staff of Assistant Curators who operate under standing orders from the Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers. The floor's lighting system is maintained under a permanent service contract with the Lumen-Monks of Spire 404.
