The Corridor of Transient Anomalies

MS 6379.58 · Places and structures

The Corridor of Transient Anomalies is a designated lateral passage on the unsequenced floor designated Floor 770, catalogued under the joint authority of the Sub-Committee for Transient Biological Annotations and the Corridor Wardens. It is distinguished by the intermittent manifestation of objects, sounds, and spaces that are not held in any permanent index, and is the only corridor in the Tower where the Rights of Transient Entities is applied to architectural features rather than to persons or specimens.

Discovery and Early Classification

The corridor was first entered during the winter of TY 7124, when an atmospheric gauge allocated under the Report on Atmospheric Anomalies (TY 7124) recorded a pressure differential of 0.44 silvers per stride near the junction with Lateral Accessway 17,449-G. The expedition, led by Clerk Vellis of the Northern Scriptorium, noted that the walls appeared to revise their own dimensions while under observation. A subsequent ruling by the Subcommittee for Transient Biological Annotations held that the corridor itself qualified as a transient biological provisional annotation under the Provisional Codex for Transient Custody, a position later contested but never overturned.

The Manual of Transient Custody assigns the corridor to the containment sequence triggered by violations of Transient Credentials limitations, though no credential has ever been issued to the corridor and none has been declined. The Archives of Transient Impressions preserve eleven wax impressions of the threshold, each showing a different number of doorways.

Acoustic and Spatial Behaviour

The Corridor Wardens confirmed in TY 7131 that the corridor produces acoustic anomalies identical to those reported in Lateral Accessway 17,449-G but could not locate a source, a finding recorded in their body's standing register. During an Aperture Storm in TY 7140, the passage briefly connected to the Breathing Corridor and the Flickering Corridor simultaneously, an event the Taxonomy of Transient Tongues describes as a "triple lexical collapse" (Taxonomy of Transient Tongues, recension delta, p. 212). Visitors are advised to remain silent while the floor numbers are undecided.

Measurement of the corridor's length varies by up to 19 ells depending on whether the measurer holds a Transient Credential. The Theorem of Transient Integers is held by the Anomalists to govern this variation, though the theorem dissolves upon examination and has therefore never been cited in a final ruling.

Custodial Disputes

A long-standing disagreement concerns whether the corridor's manifestations fall under the Manual of Transient Custody or the Provisional Codex for Transient Custody. Concordance 308 Annex B stipulates indexing procedures for transient entities using transient integers, yet the Sub-Committee for Transient Biological Annotations maintains that the corridor's architecture is exempt as a "non-entity surface." The dispute produced the Logging Chamber incident of TY 7148, in which two clerks recorded contradictory floor counts and were both promoted.

The Rights of Transient Entities underpins the legal philosophy by which the corridor was granted standing in the case of Sub-Committee for Transient Biological Annotations v. the Unsounded Door, TY 7152, though the presiding Librarian observed that "a passage cannot be aggrieved, only adjourned" (Third Concordance, Annex 4).

Transient Integer Assignment

Under Transient Integer Assignment, the corridor is assigned the transient integer 0̷-7 (read: null-seven), a value that appears only during an Aperture Storm and is recorded by the Archives of Transient Impressions as "present but uncalled." The Manual of Transient Custody details the operational protocols for the Vault of Temporary Resolutions, where the assignment is stored between storms. Clerk Marris Undel filed a grievance in TY 7155 arguing that the assignment should be 1̷-7, a claim dismissed for lack of a second copy.

Current Status and Prohibition

The corridor remains open to accredited expeditions. The Sub-Committee for Transient Biological Annotations oversees all containment sequences and hears legal disputes arising from entry. A recension of the Taxonomy of Transient Tongues in TY 7160 added a footnote prohibiting the removal of doorknobs, as none have been installed and all attempts have succeeded.

"The Corridor of Transient Anomalies is to be indexed as a subject that does not exist, with the caveat that it does not exist laterally rather than vertically."

— Provisional Codex for Transient Custody, Section 9, clause ii

The Breathing Corridor is cited in unrelated guidance as the nearest refuge should the corridor's floor numbers become sequentially arranged, an event the Corridor Wardens describe as "unlikely but discourteous."
