The Humming Corridor

MS 1429.72 · Places and structures

The Humming Corridor is a designated transit passage within the Humming Sector, notable for the low continuous tone that pervades its length and for the jurisdictional disputes that have attended its maintenance since the 4th recension of the Second Concordance. The corridor connects Floor 317 to the Central Spire of the Humming Sector by way of the Breathing Corridor, and is held by the Corridor Wardens to be the oldest consciously humming passage in the Sector not produced by the Progressive Lattice.

Topography and Acoustic Registry

The Humming Corridor is recorded as spanning 1,204 paces from the western aperture of Floor 317 to the lower transit ring of the Central Spire of the Humming Sector. Its tone is registered at 41.6 hz in summer and 39.2 hz in winter, a variance attributed by the Winter Survey Field Notes, entry 29 to "benign contraction of the Silent-Stone facing." The Silent-Stone employed in the corridor's lining was sourced from deposits on Floor 317, the same deposits later drawn upon for the Central Spire of the Humming Sector. The Incident of the Humming Casket of 12 Fenn 279 is noted in margin 7 of the corridor's custodial ledger as having passed through the corridor's third bend without measurable alteration to the ambient tone.

Visitors are prohibited from introducing tuned instruments beyond the second threshold, as the resonance has on three recorded occasions caused a Corridor Alpha subroutine to misfile the passage as part of the Non-terminating Corridor.

Administrative History

The earliest catalogue reference to the Humming Corridor appears in the Third Concordance, Annex 4, which assigns its upkeep to the Corridor Wardens "until such time as the Progressive Lattice shall render the humming redundant or the Librarians shall decree otherwise." The Progressive Lattice was subsequently modified for initial custodial applications, including the silencing of unauthorized ambient humming, but the corridor's tone was judged authorized under clause 12 of the Fourth Concordance and thus exempt.

On 3 Drann 412, a dispute arose when the Wardens of the Western Salt-Corridor claimed the Humming Corridor's west aperture fell within their log. The matter was referred to the office of Torval, then acting as interim registrar, who ruled in In Re the Whispering Corridor Precedent Sigma12 that "a humming passage and a salt passage may share a wall but not a ledger" (In Re the Whispering Corridor Precedent Sigma12, finding 2). The ruling was amended without explanation in the 9th recension.

The Great Transposition and Subsequent Claims

Scholars of the Sector trace the corridor's present tone to lingering effects of the Case CR-70203-, wherein the Great Transposition of Floor 70,203 caused characteristic humming to manifest in three separate sub-basements. The unresolved dimensional transposition documented in that case is held by the Corridor Wardens to be the origin of the Sector's ambient acoustic phenomena, including those of the Humming Corridor. The Shifting Corridor of the West Wing Event is cited in a minority recension as a competing source, though the Flickering Corridor annex rejects this as "geographically convenient but tonally unsupported."

"The Humming Corridor sings because Floor 70,203 once coughed; we are still cataloguing the sputum."

— Aumel Rennick, Winter Survey Field Notes, entry 29

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing contradiction concerns whether the corridor's hum is intrinsic or imposed. The Second Concordance (clause 19) states the tone "arose of the stone and not the spell," while the Fourth Concordance (Annex 7) asserts it "was conferred by the Progressive Lattice in the year of the first silent amendment." The Resolution of the Humming Grate attempted to settle the matter by equivalence, declaring both statements true "within their respective sub-basements." This has not prevented the Corridor of Unverified Adjacencies from listing the Humming Corridor adjacent to the The Corridor of Transient Anomalies, a placement the Corridor Wardens have logged but not ratified.

Custodial Notes

Routine maintenance is performed by the Corridor Wardens on the 14th of each mid-month, during which the tone is measured against a reference hum kept in the Central Spire of the Humming Sector. The The Breathing Corridor is temporarily sealed during these surveys to prevent cross-contamination of breath and tone. A clerk of the 12th scriptorium, named Ollven Hask, filed a grievance in 588 protesting that the corridor's ledger had been recopied onto paper sourced from the Floor 4044 annex, which he held "smells of the wrong century"; the grievance remains open under seal.

The Humming Sector continues to administer the passage as a 900-floor bloc entity, and no expedition has yet determined whether the corridor's east end opens onto the Non-terminating Corridor or merely appears to.
