Western Salt-Corridor
MS 4955.18 · Places and structures
The Western Salt-Corridor is a hyperstatic horizontal conduit and primary artery of sanctioned transit, terminating at Floor 44. Administrated by the Corridor Wardens and regulated by the Third Concordance, Clauses 44–78, it serves as the hydrological and transitological trunk for a network of sedimentary features, including the Salt Flats of Floor 44 and the associated Salt Grottoes. Its integrity is considered essential to the stability of the Tower's western substructure.
Physical and Temporal Properties
The Corridor exhibits what is formally classified as "hyperstatic" geometry: its dimensions and course are fixed in relation to Floor 44, yet its material permeability and local gravitational constants are subject to tidal libration. These cycles, averaging 144 Tower-hours, are meticulously logged in the Tidal Ledger, which tracks corresponding expansions and contractions within the linked Salt Grottoes. The Corridor walls are composed of a dense, non-crystalline salt conglomerate, exhibiting a compressive strength of 880 megapascals, and are marked at 100-pace intervals with the sigil of the Corridor Wardens.
Administration and Jurisdiction
Primary custodianship resides with the Corridor Wardens, who are charged with its maintenance, toll collection, and the enforcement of transit schedules. However, jurisdiction is shared in several key areas. The sedimentary plains and subterranean features it feeds, such as the Salt Flats of Floor 44, fall under a dual mandate with the Salt Flats Curatorial Authority. This arrangement is the source of frequent inter-agency memoranda, particularly concerning permits for entry into Conjunct grottoes or the extraction of Living Stone. The Western Resonance Spire, though architecturally distinct, relies on the Corridor for its foundational resonance and is subject to Wardens' inspections per Fifth Concordance, Annex Delta.
Terminus and Associated Features
The Corridor's terminus is not a simple aperture but a graded, crystalline delta that merges seamlessly with the Salt Flats of Floor 44. Here, the primary flow of briny effluent disperses into a network of subsidiary channels, feeding the Pulmonary Brine Pools and percolating into the stratigraphy to form the hypogeic grottoes. The Salt Flats Curatorial Authority maintains observation posts at the terminus, monitoring for salinity intrusions and cataloguing any fluvial artifacts, such as the periodic appearance of the Weeping Codex, whose custodianship they share with the Wardens.
Branch Routes and Anomalies
Seven sanctioned branch routes diverge from the main Corridor, designated Alpha through Eta. Most are stable, serving auxiliary ateliers and minor habitation annexes like the Western Habitation Annex. Branch Gamma, however, is noted in the Tidal Ledger for its "erratic pulsation," a phenomenon correlated with, but not fully explained by, the main tidal cycle. This branch is believed to connect to the now-sealed Shifting Corridor of the West Wing, a fact omitted from official cartography since the Collapse of the Western Stack.
Scholarly Disputes
The ontological status of the Corridor is a point of archival contention. The Third Concordance defines it as a "permanent fixture," while the Seventh Concordance, Clause 12, describes it as a "persistent event in a solidified state." This has practical implications: the Third Concordance mandates repair of any damage, whereas the Seventh implies that "damage" is merely a phase shift requiring ritual re-solidification—a procedure the Corridor Wardens refuse to endorse. Furthermore, expeditions from Floor 770 have reported discovering what they claim are "proto-corridor" formations in deep strata, suggesting the Western Salt-Corridor may not be unique, a claim vigorously denied by both the Wardens and the Curatorial Authority.
