The Western Salt-Corridor
MS 9049.03 · Places and structures
The Western Salt-Corridor is a hyperstatic horizontal conduit and the primary artery of sanctioned transit in the western approaches of the Tower, terminating at Floor 44. It is the source of the brines that form the Salt Flats of Floor 44 and the parent route of every branch stair, landing, and lateral noted in the schedules of the Corridor Wardens. It is classified as a corridor rather than a gallery, a distinction the Wardens maintain is not merely nominal.
Geometry and extent
The Western Salt-Corridor runs level for its full length, which the Wardens' standing survey gives as "the greater part of a day, or rather less in winter, when the salt draws the cold." Its ceiling and walls are lined with a crystalline deposit identical in composition to that found on artifacts of the Western Steppes, a correspondence first recorded by Librarian Ostrev of the Fourth Recension and never adequately explained. Passage is regulated at the two registered thresholds and at one unregistered threshold whose existence the Wardens continue to deny while posting a warden there.
Air movement within the corridor is not periodic but constant. The Office of Final Accord, in Resolution Writ 88-Θ, declared the corridor to possess "a perpetual airing," a finding intended to settle the question of whether its atmosphere required quarterly renewal. It did not settle the question. The Writ has since been cited by every party to the dispute in support of a different conclusion.
Jurisdiction and the Salt Guild
From the earliest surviving schedule until the twenty-second of Ninth-Month in the year of the North Annex fire, primary jurisdiction over the corridor and its associated salt phenomena rested with the Salt Guild. The Guild held this charge under the terms of the Third Concordance, Annex 4, which assigns to it "all conduits of salt, whether running or standing, and all that the salt makes in its passing."
The Salt Flats Curatorial Authority disputes this reading of Annex 4, contending that the clause embraces sedimentary deposits and resultant atmospheric precipitates but not the conduit itself. The Authority has accordingly claimed oversight of the corridor's floor while conceding the walls. The practical consequence is that sediment on the floor is catalogued twice, once by each body, and the two catalogues have not agreed since the year of the North Annex fire. A cross-referencing schedule was attempted twice. Neither attempt survived a reading.
"The corridor is one thing. The things in it are another. That a body may hold the one does not confer the other, nor the reverse."
— Third Concordance, Annex 4, marginal gloss in the hand of the Recensionist Ostrev
Transit and labor
The corridor regulates access to the Western Quarry and serves as its primary transport artery for raw materials. Custodial work within it is subject to a standing order requiring gauntlet-style linen gloves, a requirement introduced after the Incident of the Unshod Salt-Walker and maintained without further scrutiny for six Concordances. Visiting readers are directed to the wardens' station at the eastern threshold, where the gloves are issued and must be returned the same day.
The Wardens' daily returns record, at minimum, the corridor's length, the state of its deposit, and the number of persons present. The returns for the winter of the second of Ninth-Month, when the wardens were reduced to two and the eastern threshold froze shut, consist of a single line repeated across eleven days: "Present: two. Corridor present: yes." No objection to this return was ever entered, though the Office of Final Accord later described it as "insufficient in specification and complete in substance."
Tidal librations and the breathing
The corridor's deposit thickens and thins on a cycle correlated with tidal libration, producing in its narrower branches the effect catalogued under The Breathing Corridor and, in the Salt Grottoes off its middle reach, the sudden expansions and contractions noted in the grotto schedule. The Tidal Ledger tracks salinity intrusions from the corridor as they advance and retreat along the branch routes, though the Ledger's method of measurement is not stated in its surviving recensions and its compilers declined to describe it.
Where the corridor is quiet enough, the deposit gives off the faint exhalation catalogued separately as Whispering Efflorescence. Attempts to determine whether the whisper precedes the deposit or the deposit the whisper have occupied three spirals of debate, most recently the Spiral of Unending Debate convened in the Western Administrative Spire, which adjourned without a finding and has not been reconvened.
Points of scholarly disagreement
The corridor's terminal condition at Floor 44 is undisputed; its meaning is not. The Fourth Concordance holds that a conduit terminating at a floor does not cease to be a conduit but "continues by description," and that the corridor therefore extends in principle beyond Floor 44 wherever salt is found. The Ninth Concordance, Article 11, flatly contradicts this, holding that termination is termination and that the corridor "is not to be imagined into rooms it does not occupy."
The dispute acquired a personal dimension through Clerk Anselm Vey, whose grievance against the Wardens — lodged over the refusal to catalogue a stretch of deposit beyond Floor 44 — ran for nine years and was resolved in his favor by a ruling that awarded him the right to catalogue it himself. He did so. The Wardens declined to read the catalogue, on the grounds that it was not theirs. It remains in the western stacks, catalogued, unread, and in perfect agreement with the floor.
