Salt Guild
MS 5636.43 · Guilds, orders and offices
Salt Guild is a semi-dissolved administrative body, historically responsible for the regulation and taxation of all salt-related commodities and phenomena within the Western Salt-Corridor sector. Its primary jurisdiction, as defined by Annex 3 of the Fourth Concordance, was the hyperstatic conduit itself and its terminations, notably at Floor 44. The Guild's authority was formally superseded by the Salt Flats Curatorial Authority under the Reconciliation of Fiscal and Curatorial Mandates (Third Concordance, Clause 117), though certain residual functions persist in a state of procedural limbo.
Historical Mandate
The Guild was chartered to manage the economic and metaphysical properties of salt as it manifested within the Tower's architecture. This included:
- Levying and collecting the Salis Tithe on all harvested crystalline deposits from the Salt Flats of Floor 44 and subsurface Salt Grottoes.
- Maintaining the Tidal Ledger, which tracked salinity intrusions and brine-phase transitions within the Western Salt-Corridor.
- Overseeing the safe transport of salt-laden artifacts from the Western Steppes via the Gantry System Gamma.
- Certifying the purity and ontological stability of commercial-grade salt before its entry into the Inter-Guild Logistical Network.
Its headquarters were located on a spur off the main corridor, designated Sub-Floor 44.7, now partially flooded by a subsidiary Pulmonary Brine Pool.
Dissolution and Residual Authority
The Guild's decline is widely attributed to the Containment Breach of Floor 113, which introduced anomalous humidities into several adjacent vertical sectors, complicating the Guild's core competency in desiccated states. More critically, the Reconciliation deemed the Guild's purely fiscal approach to salt "incommensurate with its curatorial and preservative necessities." Operational control was transferred to the Salt Flats Curatorial Authority, which employed the Codex Classificatorius for taxonomy rather than ledgers for taxation.
However, the dissolution was imperfect. Annex 3 was never formally rescinded, creating a dual-mandate overlap. Consequently, several protocols still require a pro forma "Salt Guild seal," which is now applied by a junior clerk within the Curatorial Authority who also holds the dormant title of Under-Steward of the Tithe. This is most commonly encountered when applying for permits to enter Conjunct grottoes, which technically still require approval from both the Curatorial Authority and the "Guild," the latter now represented by the Corridor Wardens acting as proxies.
The Weeping Codex Dispute
The most visible manifestation of the unresolved jurisdictional overlap concerns the Weeping Codex. The Codex, which exhibits perpetual efflorescence, was declared a taxable "active saline emission" under old Guild statutes. The Salt Flats Curatorial Authority classifies it as a "sentient mineralogical artifact." Its custodianship is therefore legally shared, leading to the current arrangement whereby it resides in the Curatorial vaults but is annually "assessed for back-tithe" by the aforementioned clerk. The assessment is always calculated as zero, but the 78-page form must be completed in triplicate. The Guild of Oneirology has petitioned, unsuccessfully, to have the Codex declared a dream-object to bypass the impasse.
Scholarly Interpretation and Legacy
Academic opinion on the Guild's true nature is divided. The Constructivist Guild argues it was always a bureaucratic fiction, a "placeholder entity" designed to absorb regulatory complexity before a proper curatorial body could be established. In contrast, marginalia scholars from the Margin Commentators Guild cite payroll records suggesting the Guild once employed several hundred "Salt Diagnosts" whose function remains unclear, implying a substantive, if forgotten, operational scope.
The Guild's most enduring legacy is the standardized salinity measurement system (the "Guild Grade") still used in corridors adjacent to Floor 44. Furthermore, the distinctive hexagonal salt crystals used in the construction of the Crystalline Polyhedron of Autonomous Sorrow were sourced and certified by the Guild prior to its dissolution, a fact noted in the Polyhedron's foundation plaque.
"The Salt Guild did not manage salt; it managed the idea of salt as a transferable good. That its ledgers outlasted its warehouses is the most telling epitaph." — Commentary on Fiscal Phantoms, Vol. XII, held in the East Wing
Current Status
No active members are listed in the current Guild Register. Its remaining assets—consisting of one sealed vault of obsolete titration equipment and the intellectual property rights to the Guild Grade scale—are held in a perpetual trust administered jointly by the Curatorial Authority and the Corridor Wardens. Proposals to formally repeal Annex 3 are routinely tabled and then deferred, as the procedural cost of untangling the residual mandates is estimated to exceed the value of the salt produced on Floor 44 for the next 247 years.
