Codex Classificatorius
MS 8498.40 · Documents and ordinances
Codex Classificatorius is the foundational taxonomic directory for the Salt Flats Curatorial Authority and affiliated archival bodies, establishing the hierarchical system by which all subjects, real and speculative, are organized within the Tower’s holdings. Originally ratified under Clause 19 of the Seventh Concordance, its principles of nested categorization are considered axiomatic for all subsequent classificatory work, including the Deterministic Codex and Codex IV.
The physical Codex is housed in a hermetically sealed vitrine on Floor Ξ-117 (The Atrium of First Principles), with consultative copies distributed to major divisional libraries. Its current custodian is the Office of Systemic Integrity, a sub-department of the Librarians.
Structure and Organization
The Codex delineates a seven-tier taxonomic structure: Macro-Class, Phylum, Order, Family, Genus, Species, and Specific Epithet. Each tier is defined by a set of definitive attributes, the scaffolding for which is further elaborated in Annex Sigma-7 of Codex IV. For example, the classification "Luminescent-Cryptogamic-Aethereal" places a subject within the Macro-Class of luminous phenomena, the Phylum of non-flowering reproductive structures, and the Order of intangible substances.
Cross-referencing is managed through a system of aperture markings and spiral indices, which themselves are subject to the metrological standards outlined in the Standard Metrological Protocols. A typical entry reads:
Specific Epithet: Verdigris-whispering
Referent: Unified Codex of Silent Chimes, Folio Δ-44
Attribute Ledger Coordinates: 7.Ξ.19.α – 7.Ξ.19.γ
The Attribute Ledger
The operational instrument of the Codex Classificatorius is the Attribute Ledger, a continuously updated manuscript where observed or theorized characteristics of a subject are formally placed to determine its taxonomic position. The Ledger’s maintenance protocols are dictated by the Codex, requiring quarterly audits by no fewer than three independent verifiers from the Cadre of Taxonomic Reconciliation. Disputes regarding attribute placement are settled by reference to the Precepts of Perpetual Adherence, though these often conflict with later Concordance clauses.
Historical Revisions
The Codex has undergone forty-seven major revisions since its inception. The most significant, Revision XXIII, followed the Year of the Misshelved Codex, during which the discovery of The Deterministic Codex necessitated the creation of an entirely new Phylum ("Deterministic-Processual") to accommodate self-referential archival apparatuses. Revision XXXV controversially reclassified all subjects pertaining to "un-sounded harmonics" from the Family Sonorous to the Family Potential, a decision that remains contested in the lower courts of the Scroll of Conditional Elevations.
Contradictions and Speculative Frameworks
As a living document appended to by successive generations of librarians, the Codex contains numerous internal contradictions. Most famously, Clause 802 (defining temporal fluidity as a Class-level attribute) directly contradicts Clause 1147 (defining it as a Species-level modifier). These are typically resolved ad hoc by field librarians applying situational precedent.
The Codex itself categorizes competing philosophical models for taxonomy. The dominant "Top-Down Hypothesis," which asserts classification must proceed from the broadest possible category downward, is listed as a Category-3 Speculative Framework. Its rival, the "Attribute-First" model, is given equal footing as a Category-3 framework, ensuring scholarly debate is structurally embedded within the system.
Influence on Derivative Codices
The Codex Classificatorius provides the structural DNA for nearly all specialized taxonomic manuals in the Tower. The Somatic Codex’s non-linear structure for cataloging corporeal anomalies is explicitly derived from its principles, as outlined in Codex IV. Similarly, the Field Verification Codex, which governs Cadre operations, uses a simplified, field-applicable version of the Codex’s hierarchy to justify the application of Status Fields. Even the Aortic Codex and the Weeping Codex, despite their highly specialized natures, are officially catalogued under circulatory and melancholic protocols, respectively, defined by the Classificatorius.
Current Status and Access
Access to the master Codex Classificatorius requires a permit stamped with the Seal of Systemic Inquiry, obtainable only after submitting Form Δ-9 to the Office of Systemic Integrity. Unauthorized consultation is a breach of Concordance and is punishable by re-assignment to a vertical shelving unit for a period not less than one fiscal cycle. The next scheduled revision (Revision XLVIII) is slated for the third quarter of the current archival era, pending the findings of the ongoing SMP-Δ survey of lower-floors epistemology.
