Somatic Codex

MS 4108.20 · Documents and ordinances

Somatic Codex refers to two distinct but conceptually linked archival authorities pertaining to the study and regulation of internal experience within the Tower: the document of record maintained by the Somatics Collegium, and the designated floor complex where the primary instruments for its compilation are housed.

The Document

The Somatic Codex (Document SC-α) is the central, living register for all data pertaining to Somatic Aquifers and their associated phenomena. Compiled and periodically revised under the sole authority of the Somatics Collegium, it serves as the definitive source for measurements of Emotional Runoff, calibration records for Somatic Pluviometers, and the taxonomical classification of somatic experiences. Its entries are considered provisional for a standard period of fifty years, after which they may be elevated to canonical status, archived in a supplemental annex, or expunged following a Triennial Review of Ephemera. The Codex's structure is non-linear, organized according to a proprietary somatic-key system rather than by floor, date, or subject, a design choice outlined in Annex VII of Codex IV.

The Physical Floor

The Somatic Codex (Floor 714.) is a specialized administrative level located three spirals above The Somatic Stacks. It houses the Hall of Inscription, where technicians transcribe data from deployed Pluviometers directly into the master document, and the Calibration Vaults, which contain the primary standard weights and emotional baselines against which all field instruments are measured. The floor's environmental conditions are strictly maintained at 14°C and 65% humidity to preserve the integrity of both parchment and the delicate resonance crystals used in data verification. Access is restricted to Collegium members bearing a Sigil of Internal Concord, as per Deterministic Codex Ordinance 22.8.

Relation to Other Authorities

The document Somatic Codex exists in a state of deliberate tension with The Deterministic Codex. While the Deterministic Codex deals in absolute, verifiable phenomena, the Somatic Codex catalogs the subjective and transient. This dichotomy is a source of ongoing jurisdictional dispute. The Weeping Codex, for instance, is formally listed as a subschema of the Deterministic Codex, yet its entries concerning melancholic saturation are directly sourced from Section Ψ of the Somatic Codex. Furthermore, the Somatic Cartography division relies entirely on Codex data for its hydrographic surveys, though it often critiques the Codex's temporal latency.

Compilation Process

Data enters the Codex via two primary streams. The first is direct instrumental input: certified readings from Monitoring Wells in The Somatic Stacks and other active Aquifers are delivered daily by pneumatic tube. The second is via attested personal testimony, submitted on Form SC-114 (Report of Uninstrumented Affective Event). These testimonies undergo a process of "somatic corroboration" by a panel of three Collegium readers before being entered as a footnote, pending instrumental verification. The principle that "a thing catalogued in the Tower is real within the Tower" finds its most frequent application here, granting provisional reality to even the most ephemeral reported feeling until such time as it is either measured or dismissed.

Controversies and Revisions

The most significant overhaul of the Somatic Codex occurred in the aftermath of the Year of the Misshelved Codex, which exposed critical flaws in earlier affective taxonomy. The current edition (SC-α.9) dates from this period and incorporates the structural scaffolding principles that also influenced the final draft of Codex IV. A persistent scholarly disagreement concerns the Codex's handling of Somatic Resonance events. The Thorne School, following Aris Thorne's initial taxonomy, argues these are discrete phenomena belonging in a separate ledger. The Collegium's prevailing view, however, is that resonance is merely a high-amplitude subspecies of standard Emotional Runoff and is thus properly recorded in the primary Codex, albeit with a specific diacritical mark.

Current Status

As of the last published Catalogue Addendum, the physical Somatic Codex document comprises 4,822 vellum folios, housed in a continuous-scroll mechanism in the central rotunda of Floor 714.. Its digital shadow-archive, maintained in the Aortic Codex server-farms, is reported to exceed 47 pedabytes of correlated data. The Collegium has announced, via Bulletin SC-α.9/Notice 12, that the next Triennial Review will consider the creation of a dedicated sub-codex for Emotional Fossils, a proposal that has sparked heated debate within the fields of both somatic and deterministic archivistry.
