Margin Commentators Guild

MS 7946.68 · Guilds, orders and offices

"A margin, once measured, is a conclusion. Our work is to measure the space between the measurement and the understanding."
— From the Guild Charter, Preamble

The Margin Commentators Guild (designation GTM/GC-) is a minor, though vociferous, sub-guild within the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild, specializing in the analysis, critique, and contextual exegesis of margin-related documentation and disputes. Its members, known as Commentators, do not engage in the physical act of margin measurement or arbitration; instead, they produce annotated commentaries, glossaries of terms, and hermeneutic treatises on the implications of rulings such as those pertaining to the Western Margin of Floor 7,412 (“The Solarium”). The Guild operates under the principle that a margin is not merely a volumetric void but a "textual artifact of delimitation," and thus requires dedicated literary and juridical interpretation.

History and Charter

The Guild was formally chartered in the 14th Annex to the Seventh Concordance, following the protracted and document-heavy dispute over the Plenum Boundary of Floor 7,412. The ruling by the Directorate of Boundary Arbitration generated over 3,000 pages of ancillary opinions, dissents, and procedural logs. The nascent Guild's first major project was the compilation and cross-reference of this corpus, a seven-volume set titled Exegesis upon the Western Solarium Margin: With Appendices on Porous Boundary Precedents. This established their modus operandi: to act as the custodians of margin-related discourse, if not of the margins themselves.

Primary Functions

The Guild's output is categorized into three primary streams:

Notable Publications and Disputes

The Guild's most controversial publication is the annual Compendium of Unheeded Dissents, which collects minority opinions from margin arbitrations that were formally overruled but which the Commentators argue contain "germinal juridical truth." This has brought them into frequent, if polite, conflict with the Custodians of the Margin, some of whom view the practice as undermining final arbitrations.

A more collegial relationship exists with the Guild of Formal Cartographers, for whom the Commentators produce "cartographic legends of intent," explaining the legal reasoning behind why a particular boundary line on a formal plat is dashed, dotted, or shimmer-inked according to Horticultural Guild Standard 114-Δ-7b.

Internal Schisms

The Guild is not monolithic. Two principal factions have emerged, their debate centering on the ontological status of a commented-upon margin:

  1. The Textualists hold that the commentary itself, once entered into the record, becomes part of the margin's legal definition. For them, the Western Margin of Floor 7,412 now includes the 3,000 pages of discourse about it, effectively making the margin a partly textual entity.
  2. The Purists argue that commentary is merely a shadow cast upon the wall of the void; it describes but does not constitute. They maintain a strict fidelity to the physical measurements as recorded under the Margin Measurement Protocol, viewing the Textualist position as a dangerous conflation of map and territory.

This schism famously plays out in the Guild's own internal meetings, which have been described as "a dispute about the procedural margins for discussing substantive margins."

Relationship to Other Bodies

As a sub-guild of the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild, the Margin Commentators hold formal symposia with other juridical sub-guilds. They have a standing memorandum of understanding with the Scrollwrights' Guild for the production of durable commentary scrolls, and an often-strained dialogue with the Realized Absence Guild, whose focus on catalogued non-existences they find conceptually adjacent but methodologically unsound. Their requests for collaborative projects with the Indexers are typically met with bemused deferrals, as the Indexers' systems are not designed to cross-reference layers of hermeneutic analysis.

The Guild maintains a small liaison office adjacent to the chambers of the Directorate of Boundary Arbitration, though their requests for "observer status" during live arbitrations have been consistently denied on the grounds that their note-taking would create a "meta-record" that could itself become a subject of dispute.
