Margin Measurement Protocol
MS 5010.03 · Documents and ordinances
The Margin Measurement Protocol (abbreviated MMP) is the codified set of procedures for establishing, verifying, and annotating the precise dimensions of any declared margin within the Tower. Maintained and issued biannually by the Custodians of the Margin, the current version is a 47-page document (including all annexes) and constitutes the primary technical standard for margin-related surveying, cartography, and legal demarcation.
Purpose and Scope
The Protocol exists to resolve the inherent instability of marginal spaces. Unmeasured or improperly measured margins are subject to perceptual drift, dimensional bleeding, and, in severe cases, conceptual collapse. The MMP provides a framework of repeatable observations and calculations that "anchor" a margin, granting it procedural reality. Its jurisdiction extends to all declared margins, from the vast Western Margin of Floor 7,412 (“The Solarium”) to the theoretical margins of a single shelf or desk drawer, provided they have been formally declared per the Third Concordance.
Core Components
The Protocol is divided into three primary sections: Instrumental, Metrological, and Annotative.
- The Instrumental section details the approved tools, from standard-issue peripheral calipers to more esoteric devices like aperture goniometers, and mandates their calibration against the Standard Tower Units (STU).
- The Metrological section outlines the specific steps for taking measurements, emphasizing redundancy through triple-verified measurement chains and the application of the Selvage Principle to account for fringe decay.
- The Annotative section governs the documentation of measurements, requiring cross-reference to the Lexicon of Peripheral Nomenclature and the calculation of the Margin of Procedural Certainty.
The Margin of Procedural Certainty
A central output mandated by the MMP is the calculation of the Margin of Procedural Certainty (M). The standard formula, given in Clause 22.7, is M = (I × C) / V, where I is the Instrumental Consistency Coefficient, C is the Concordance with prior measurements, and V is the Volatility of the margin's conceptual substrate. This yields a dimensionless value between 0 and 1. A value below 0.5 necessitates a re-survey under the stricter guidelines of Annex Δ. The maintenance of an M-value above 0.78 for seven consecutive measurement cycles is one prerequisite for a margin to be considered "Canonical."
Relation to Other Protocols
The MMP is not an isolated document. It is explicitly interlinked with several other major Tower protocols:
- Standard Measurement Protocol (SMP-Δ)
- The SMP-Δ provides the foundational measurement philosophy from which the MMP derives its instrumental and metrological sections. The MMP is often described as a specialized application of the SMP-Δ for a particular class of topological feature.
- Protocol for the Measurement of Absent Rooms
- The MMP superseded the older Protocol for the Measurement of Absent Rooms in the 14th Kappa Cycle, inheriting and refining its techniques for measuring defined negations of space.
- Manual of Hydrographic Protocol
- A contentious relationship exists, as the Hydrographic Protocol claims precedence for margins adjacent to catalogued liquid bodies (e.g., the Shore of Unfinished Sentences on Floor 9,002). Disputes are settled by the Margin Commentators Guild.
Updates and Disputes
The biannual update cycle is a source of considerable debate within metrological circles. Revisions are often precipitated by the discovery of measurement anomalies, such as the infamous 43/909 Protocol Gap, which revealed a procedural inconsistency between the MMP and the SMP-Δ. Each update incorporates errata and new annexes, but is also required to formally cite any changes to the Lexicon of Peripheral Nomenclature. A minor but persistent schism exists between purists who believe the MMP should concern itself solely with physical extension and progressives who argue for the inclusion of temporal margin analysis; the latter remains confined to experimental annexes.
Practical Application
In practice, a Junior Custodian applying the MMP to a newly declared margin will proceed as follows: establish a measurement baseline using SMP-Δ principles; perform the triple-chain verification as specified in Clause 14; calculate the Margin of Procedural Certainty; and finally, submit the annotated survey to the local Archivist-Registrar for notarization. Failure to adhere to the Protocol does not merely produce an inaccurate measurement; it risks rendering the margin itself "protocol-ambiguous," a state that can require extensive remedial surveying to rectify.
