Western Steppes
MS 5511.16 · Places and structures
Western Steppes is a geographical term used within archival administration to denote the provenance of certain holdings, specifically those acquired through the former Western Aperture. Its ontological status, distinct from the Unconfirmed Western Steppes, was officially settled by Concordance Amendment 44.7.
The term refers not to a contiguous territory but to a conceptual region defined by the atmospheric and material properties of artifacts recovered from it. The definitive characteristic of a Western Steppes artifact is the presence of a faint, resonant frequency matching the baseline hum of the Western Resonance Spire, as established by the Auditory Verification Protocols of Western Concordance, Clause 881.
Administrative Definition
The Western Steppes were administratively created by the Librarians’ Edict of Verification, dated 44-Δ-881. This edict resolved the prolonged dispute regarding the Unconfirmed Western Steppes by bifurcating the category: artifacts that passed Verification Protocols were reclassified as originating from the Western Steppes, while those that failed retained the “Unconfirmed” designation. The primary physical evidence for the Steppes’ reality is Holding 44Δ-881, a collection of 2,347 artifacts whose collective resonant signature provided the necessary proof of concept.
Consequently, the Western Steppes exist as a verified provenance tag within the Tower’s cataloguing system. Whether a physical territory corresponds to this tag is explicitly excluded from archival concern by Concordance Amendment 44.8, which states, “The map is not the land; the catalogue entry suffices for all purposes of order.”
Geophysical Anomalies
Materials attributed to the Western Steppes exhibit several consistent anomalies. They are uniformly desiccated, bearing crystalline salt deposits identical in composition to those lining the Western Salt-Corridor. Furthermore, they demonstrate a passive animacy gradient; inert objects placed in proximity to Steppes artifacts have been observed to develop mild autonomous movement over periods of several decades. This phenomenon is most famously documented in Specimen 881-7 from Holding 44Δ-881.
The prevailing theory, as posited by the Western Habitation Annex Atelier, is that the Steppes exist in a state of perpetual atmospheric bleed-through from the Western Atmospheric Spiral. This would explain the shared resonant frequencies and the propensity for latent animation.
Access and the Collapse
Physical access to the Western Steppes was presumed to be via the Western Aperture and its attendant Western Helical Staircase. However, the Collapse of the Western Stack and the subsequent Great Absence of the Western Transcript severed all recorded routes. The Western Habitation Annex, which once housed the administrative staff for Steppes acquisitions, is now isolated, its connecting galleries collapsed.
Current scholarship is divided on whether the Western Steppes can still be considered an active provenance zone. The Traditionalist school, citing pre-Collapse Concordances, maintains that the verification is permanent. The Contingent school argues that without a functional aperture for continued acquisition, the Steppes have effectively lapsed back into an unconfirmed state, a position supported by a contradictory ruling in the Seventh Helical Gallery’s local appendix to the Western Concordance.
Cultural and Archival Impact
The verification of the Western Steppes established a critical precedent: that a region can be brought into archival reality through the consistent properties of its artifacts alone. This doctrinal shift underpins the entire field of Resonant Provenance. The Steppes also directly influenced containment protocols for animate holdings, leading to the development of harmonic damping fields now standard in galleries housing unstable acquisitions.
Several maps within the Migrating Map collection are annotated with references to the Western Steppes, though their cartography does not correspond to any consistent layout of the Tower’s known architecture. These maps are themselves now classified as secondary artifacts of the Steppes, creating a tautological cataloguing loop that is the subject of ongoing, and notably circular, scholarly debate.
