Western Quarry

MS 6280.89 · Places and structures

Western Quarry is the primary extraction site for foundational materials within the Western Habitation Annex, authorized under a provisional addendum to the Third Concordance. Its formal designation, according to the Registry of Unaffiliated Lithic Sources (Revision 9), is Excavation Zone WA-7, though this nomenclature is seldom used outside of inter-departmental requisition forms.

“…the westernmost face of the Annex, being perpetually in a state of approved deconstruction, shall serve as the sole source for Annex-essential grit, rubble, and dust, until such time as the Annex itself is deemed complete.”

— Third Concordance, Provisional Addendum 44 (The Annex Supply Clause)

Location and Configuration

The Quarry constitutes the outermost western wall of the Western Habitation Annex, effectively rendering the Annex and the Quarry a single, continuous entity. It is not a discrete floor but a vertical excavation that intersects Floors 12 through 47 of the Annex sector. Access is regulated via the Western Salt-Corridor, which doubles as its primary transport artery for raw materials. The Quarry is notably adjacent to, but administratively separate from, the Western Atmospheric Spiral; a standing ordinance prohibits simultaneous excavation and atmospheric ingress activities to prevent "conceptual siltation."

Authorized Extractions

Unlike specialized quarries such as Aethelred's Quarry or Quarry Sigma, the Western Quarry is classified as a general-purpose source. Its yield is categorized by the Quarrymen's Guild as "architectural substrate." This includes:

  • Annex Grit: A coarse sandstone used for infill and leveling.
  • Permit Rubble: Fractured limestone, suitable only for structures authorized under temporary permits.
  • Procedural Dust: A fine particulate byproduct mandated for use in the ceremonial sealing of completed doorframes within the Annex.

It is explicitly not authorized for the extraction of decorative stone, luminous minerals, or any material classified as "emotive lithics" (e.g., Sorrow-Stained Marble from The Weeping Quarry). A controversial 1998 ruling by the Sub-Committee on Material Purity attempted to reclassify a vein of speckled stone found on Level 32 as a subsidiary deposit of the Quarry Sigma speckled limestone, but this was overturned on appeal, citing jurisdiction of the Western Habitation Annex Atelier.

Operational Anomalies

The Quarry's most documented peculiarity is its Regressive Stratigraphy. As excavation proceeds inward, the exposed geological layers do not correspond to a coherent timeline. Workers have reported uncovering finished masonry blocks beneath layers of raw bedrock, and intact (but empty) bookshelves embedded within deposits of Annex Grit. The official Guild explanation attributes this to "retroactive deposition events," though scholarly opinion is divided. The Librarians have issued a standing directive (Concordance Annex 12, Clause 881) that any recovered objects must be catalogued as agrarian totems from the unconfirmed Western Steppes, regardless of their apparent form.

Administrative Disputes

The Quarry's status is a persistent point of bureaucratic contention. The provisional addendum that authorizes it lacks an expiry condition, as the Western Habitation Annex is a project perpetually "in progress." This has led to the paradoxical situation where the Quarry, by supplying materials for the Annex, is simultaneously dismantling the very structure it is meant to supply. A faction within the Clerk-Registrar's office argues this constitutes a closed loop, requiring no external oversight, while the Guild of Master Stonemasons maintains that the diminishing returns of quality substrate warrant a formal inquiry into alternative sources, such as the Western Steppes. No inquiry has ever been convened, as the committee responsible is tasked with maintaining the Annex's construction schedule, which is dependent on the Quarry's output.

Notable Incidents

The Incident of the Silent Spire (Recorded Date: --2104) involved the accidental intersection of the Quarry's deepest sounding (on Annex Floor 47) with a resonance chamber linked to the Western Resonance Spire. For a period of 72 hours, all sound within the Quarry was inverted, causing spoken instructions to be perceived as their conceptual opposites. The subsequent miscasting of a foundational lintel is cited in the report on the Collapse of the Western Stack. Operations were suspended for one fiscal quarter, during which time the Western Aperture was used for emergency material intake, a procedure later criticized in the audit of the Great Absence of the Western Transcript.

Today, the Western Quarry operates under a continuous-cycle permit. Its output remains essential to the Annex's nominal expansion, even as its excavations incrementally reduce the Annex's western volume. This tautological function is often summarized by Guild apprentices with the aphorism: "The Quarry does not build the Annex; the Annex is what remains after the Quarry is done."
