Sorrow-Stained Marble
MS 8574.62 · Objects and instruments
Sorrow-Stained Marble is a Class Vb Imbued Material, characterized by its deep indigo-grey base coloration and distinctive white, dendritic veining that resembles a tear's path. Its resonant acoustic properties, which manifest as a sub-audible hum detectable by instruments such as the Surveyor Unit, make it a regulated substance under Concordance 33, Annex 7. Primary deposits are recorded on Floors 87 (The Weeping Quarry), 204, and 422.
Material Properties
Sorrow-Stained Marble possesses a Mohs hardness of 4.5–5. Its defining characteristic is its "affective resonance," a persistent low-frequency emission measured at 18–22 Hz. This is distinct from the higher-frequency audible distress associated with Ignorance Marble or the whispered narratives of Lament Marble. Per the findings of the Department of Sanctioned Melancholy, this resonance aligns with the non-referential, autochthonous qualities of melancholy as defined in P.O.D. Ruling 89-Γ, rather than the causal sorrow linked to perceived loss. The material is mildly thermochromatic, shifting to a lighter grey when ambient temperature exceeds 30°C, a process first documented during the excavation of the Eastern Gallery on Floor 204.
Regulated Applications
Use of Sorrow-Stained Marble is strictly governed by the Materials Sub-committee of the Librarians. Permitted applications are limited to non-structural, contemplative spaces. Notable sanctioned installations include:
- The Sighing Atrium on Floor 116 (paired with susurrus marble for harmonic counterpoint).
- The plinths within the Gallery of Superfluous Marks, following the Nudge Marks incident.
- Accent panels in the meditation cells adjoining Aperture Sigma.
Its use in load-bearing members is expressly forbidden, a prohibition that extends to all imbued materials following the collapse of the Western Stack on Floor 91, which was constructed with sorrow-tempered steel.
The Quarrying Controversy
The method of extraction is a point of ongoing procedural dispute. Concordance 19, Clause 42 mandates "extraction by resonant fracturing," using tuned frequencies to cleave stone without tools, to preserve the material's innate qualities. However, Survey Protocol 12-c advocates for "silent diamond-tipped saws," arguing that resonant techniques risk amplifying and dispersing the melancholy field, potentially affecting nearby holdings. This disagreement has led to intermittent work stoppages at the Weeping Quarry, with each faction citing conflicting ordinances. The most recent arbitration, held during the Seventy-Second Conclave, was adjourned indefinitely.
Distinction from Related Materials
Cataloguers must carefully distinguish Sorrow-Stained Marble from similar lithic materials:
- Ignorance Marble
- Exhibits sharper, more chaotic veining and projects audible distress signals; used historically in Screaming Pillars.
- Lament Marble
- Possesses a smoother, greyer vein structure and emits narrative whispers, as documented in the Whispering Stairwell during the The Twenty-Third Inquest.
- Ideational Silica
- A synthetic, resonant-neutral substrate assayed against Ignorance Marble; lacks any inherent affective signature.
The definitive assay, as per the Archivist's Manual, involves a 24-hour proximity test with a calibrated Lunar Epiphysis and review of the resultant frequency charts.
Notable Specimens
The largest single slab on record, "The Quietus Panel" (3.2m x 5.1m x 0.15m), is mounted in the Hall of Ambient Resonance on Floor 300. Its provenance is listed as Floor 422, Extraction Lot 422-87-Γ. A smaller, but historically significant, fragment is embedded in the floor of the Quorum Chamber on Floor 120, reportedly taken from a plinth that once supported the Red Folio before its relocation.
