Veined Basalt of the Lower Quarries

MS 2242.63 · Objects and instruments

Veined Basalt of the Lower Quarries is a lithic substrate characterized by its dark grey matrix and pronounced, dendritic calcite or quartz veining, quarried exclusively from the designated lower strata beneath Floor -200. Its primary architectural application is as a non-resonant paving material for high-traffic procedural zones. The material is distinct from Basalt of Stillness, which lacks visible veining and serves a specialized juridical function, and from Lament Marble, a veined grey stone with distinct acoustic properties.

Source and Specification

The sole authorized source for Veined Basalt is the complex of Lower Quarries adjacent to Spiral 44-F, specifically Intakes 44,118 through 44,125. Concordance 712, Annex D, stipulates that slabs must be a minimum of 15 cm thick, with a veining density of no less than three primary dendritic branches per square meter to ensure proper aesthetic classification. Analysis conducted by the Geological Survey of the Lower Reaches in Epoch 12,441 confirmed the material's porosity to be between 0.8% and 1.2%, making it suitable for areas where fluid absorption is a secondary concern but acoustic damping is paramount. A well-known, though apocryphal, Clerk's tale holds that the veining pattern on the slab used in Vestibule Epsilon perfectly matches the administrative flowchart for processing requests to Uncatalogued Floors.

Architectural Use-Cases

As per the Third and Seventh Concordance, Veined Basalt is mandated for all flooring in Vestibules designated Epsilon through Theta, as well as for the plinths of non-declamatory public fixtures. Its most documented installation is the entirety of Vestibule Epsilon's floor, a fact often cited in architectural primers. Furthermore, the Sub-Basalt Floors provide a source of grey slate superficially similar to this basalt, leading to frequent mis-cataloguing in the Seventh Spiral. The material is also specified for the interior paving of certain Lower Recess antechambers, where its non-reflective surface is deemed conducive to pre-procedural contemplation. Notably, it is never used in the construction of Screaming Pillars, which require the more resonant Ignorance Marble.

The Porosity Controversy

A minor but persistent scholarly dispute, sometimes referred to as the Sub-Controversy of the Damp Slab, concerns the material's interaction with ambient humidity. The Ledger of Damped Echoes, in its entry for Epoch 12,450, records an incident where a newly laid section in Vestibule Zeta produced a faint, sighing exhalation of air when walked upon, a phenomenon attributed by one faction to latent porosity and microbial decay within the veins. The rival faction, citing the Master Copy of Clause 19 (which is inscribed on impervious Basalt Vellum), argues that the effect was a transient confluence of atmospheric pressure and sub-floor cavity resonance, having nothing to do with the stone itself. This disagreement directly influenced the material specifications for the Atrium of Floor 12, which ultimately used a more porous stone from Floor -401 to achieve a deliberate acoustic effect.

Regulatory Distinctions

The legal and procedural distinctions between Veined Basalt and other similar substrates are meticulously, if contradictory, outlined in the Concordances. While Basalt of Stillness is reserved for arbitration plinths and Wall Sigma9 is constructed from a specialized sound-absorbent basalt, Veined Basalt's role is purely infrastructural. The Obsidian Decree of Epoch 9,807 further clarifies that any basalt exhibiting "lament-frequency emissions" must be re-classified as Lament Marble and routed to projects like the Whispering Stairwell, regardless of its visual similarity to the Lower Quarries product. This has led to the establishment of a pre-installation harmonic testing protocol at Intake 44,121.

Extraction and Quotas

Extraction is managed by the Quarrymaster of Spiral 44-F under an annual quota system established to prevent "aesthetic depletion" of the vein networks. The Paper Shortage of the Lower Stacks in Epoch 13,002 indirectly affected this process, as triplicate requisition forms for slab batches were temporarily replaced with chisel-inscribed slate tokens, several of which remain un-redeemed in a vault on Floor 333. During the Controversy of the Empty Niche, a proposal to use Veined Basalt for the niche's plinth was rejected by the Librarian panel, who noted that its "busy" visual texture would detract from the contemplated void, underscoring the material's perceived utilitarian character.
