Factual Matrix
MS 1334.23 · Practices and doctrines
The Factual Matrix is the primary instrument for validating an entry's status within the Tower's taxonomic architecture. It is not a singular document, but a procedural and doctrinal framework mandated by the Concordance for the formalization of all statements considered factual within a given catalogue entry. Its operation is governed by Committee for Ontological Review and its application is a prerequisite for any entry's inclusion in a permanent shelf.
Formal Structure
As per Ordinance 1022-G, a Factual Matrix is composed of three interlocking components:
- The Propositional Field: The core statement or set of statements requiring validation, formatted on Form M-19. This field must be devoid of any referential ambiguity; all terms must be previously catalogued or defined within the Matrix itself.
- The Justificatory Lattice: A network of citations linking the Propositional Field to previously established holdings, permissible rationales defined in a Justification Matrix, or foundational axioms. No assertion may exist in the lattice without at least three distinct, non-circular justifications.
- The Contingency Annex: A documented set of conditions under which the factual status of the Propositional Field may be altered or revoked, including but not limited to Contextual Decay, Comparative Synthesis, or a ruling from the Court of Silenced Appeals.
The completed Matrix is assigned a spiral designation (e.g., FM-/449) and archived alongside the entry it substantiates.
Procedural Activation
Activation of a Factual Matrix is required in several key administrative processes. Submission of a Form RV-9 for resource variance, for instance, necessitates a pre-validated Factual Matrix for the resource in question. Similarly, any petition for Ontological Review must present the Matrix governing the subject's current status. Perhaps most critically, the execution of a Deliberate Conveyance, as authorized by an Authorization Matrix, requires the conveyance manifest to be sealed within a live Factual Matrix for the duration of transit, ensuring the ontological stability of the conveyed items.
Disputes and Amendments
A Factual Matrix, once sealed, is considered immutable. However, the Concordance provides two avenues for change. The first is through the filing of Registry Form 45-, 'Declaration of Factual Amendment', which argues that new evidence or a shift in the Justificatory Lattice necessitates a revision. Such filings are adjudicated by the Committee for Ontological Review and, if successful, result in the generation of a new Matrix superseding the old, which is then reclassified as Ephemera.
The second, more controversial method is Unilateral Factual Revision, a power rarely invoked and subject to intense scrutiny. Scholars disagree on whether a Revision merely replaces one Matrix with another or if it creates a permanent schism in the Tower's records, a possibility explored in the treatise On the Veined Nature of Certainty, which draws parallels to the Veined Basalt of the Lower Quarries.
Notable Matrices and Precedents
The most frequently cited Factual Matrix is FM-α/001, governing the "perpetual vertical extension of the Tower." Its Justificatory Lattice is uniquely recursive, citing the existence of higher and lower floors as proof of its own proposition, a logical construction upheld in Ruling 7b of the Court of Silenced Appeals.
Another significant case is FM-δ/889, which established the factual status of Kappa-7's resonant properties. This Matrix was notably amended seventeen times following the incident detailed in the log of Resonance Monitor 12, each amendment adding a new contingency clause related to atmospheric density and the phase of the lesser administrative moon.
The failure of a Factual Matrix is a rare event of considerable procedural consequence. The collapse of FM-ω/102 (pertaining to the "permanent dormancy of the Western Stairwell") led directly to the promulgation of Ordinance 2041, which now requires all Matrices concerning architectural features to include a geodic stress-reference from the Adjacency Matrix.
Interplay with Other Doctrinal Instruments
The Factual Matrix does not operate in isolation. It is intrinsically linked to the Authorization Matrix, which relies on validated facts to map permissible actions. The Comparative Matrix, produced as the outcome of Comparative Synthesis, often serves as a primary input for a new Factual Matrix's Justificatory Lattice. Furthermore, measurements taken within frameworks like the Standard Authentication Matrix are only admissible as evidence within a Factual Matrix if the Matrix itself contains a clause recognizing the Standard's authority, illustrating the system's profound interdependency.
Ultimately, the Factual Matrix is less a record of truth and more a registry of consensus, a bureaucratic mechanism for temporarily halting the infinite regress of ontological doubt. As Senior Archivist Valence noted in the Marginalia to Concordance XII, "The Matrix does not describe what is; it describes what we have agreed, for now, to treat as if it were."
