Deep Archive
MS 8752.08 · Practices and doctrines
Deep Archive is a procedural classification for catalogued material whose primary subject is the process of its own archiving. It is distinct from archival practice and archival theory, and is instead the meta-documentation of the Tower's own administrative and physical acts of inscription, storage, and retrieval. Material is designated Deep Archive when its provenance is rendered inseparable from the bureaucratic or thaumaturgical mechanisms that secured it for the shelves, as per Third Concordance, Annex VII, Clause 11.
Operational Definition
The classification originated in Year of the Archive 1142 as a response to the influx of materials from the Cartographers’ Auxiliary Deep-Descent Expeditions. Expedition logs, supply manifests, and even repair orders for lift mechanisms were found to contain observational data that had, through procedural entanglement, become the only surviving record of certain fleeting phenomena. The Manual of Percolate & Palliative, in its 44th revision, formalized the criteria: a holding qualifies for Deep Archive status if more than 60% of its substantive content describes or is a direct product of the archival act itself. This includes, but is not limited to: 1
- Vellumsmith's preparatory notes detailing the emotional resonance of the inks used to transcribe a now-lost source text.
- Functionary reports on the environmental stability of a stack during the shelving of a volatile tome.
- The complete paperwork chain—requisitions, approvals, logistics—for the relocation of a single folio.
Physical and Bureaucratic Locations
Deep Archive holdings are not consolidated in a single spatial location. They are inter-filed with their referent subjects, creating a recursive cataloguing structure. A researcher examining a record in the Archive of Provisional Origins may find appended to it the Deep Archive documentation of its own provisional certification. However, the master registry of Deep Archive designations, and the concordances governing their cross-referencing, are maintained by the Functionaries of the Final Line and stored in a dedicated annex adjacent to the Deep Stacks. This proximity is due to the high incidence of Deep Archive material generated by containment procedures in that region, which fall under the oversight of the Physickers of the Deep Font.
Scholarly Value and Disputes
The Materialist School contends that Deep Archive holdings represent the only objectively verifiable data within the Tower, as they document real, completed actions performed by known agents (e.g., clerks, physickers, functionaries). They argue that the content of a primary source may be speculative, but the fact of its filing at a specific Standard Archive Chronology timestamp is an empirical truth. This view is championed in their submission of The Miletus Fragment for deep-spectrum analysis under the Quickened Rules of Dispute.
Opposing this, traditionalists from the Archive of Conditional Truths assert that Deep Archive classification creates an infinite regress of meta-documentation, where the value of the original subject is utterly subsumed by the administrative noise surrounding it. They cite the case of Sorrow-Stained Marble, where the Deep Archive records concerning its moisture-controlled transit from Line Sigma now exceed the physical and descriptive records of the marble itself by a factor of twelve. The Heretical Archive has been known to selectively collect only the Deep Archive paperwork for certain events, intentionally discarding the "primary" holding, as a political statement on bureaucratic reality.
Notable Sub-Collections
- The Gricolt Vellum
- Not the vellum itself, but the 300-page dossier detailing the seven-year dispute between the Scriveners' Guild and the Physickers of the Deep Font over the sourcing and preparation of the specific vellum grade used. It is a canonical Deep Archive text, often used in training.
- Incident Report Sigma-Δ/11444
- The full containment and remediation record for a spill of Emotional Runoff in the Deep Stacks. The report's exhaustive detail on procedural response has made it a more frequently consulted resource on the properties of Emotional Runoff than the Runoff's own original catalog entry.
- The Archivists' Luncheon Menus (Year of the Archive 12044 - 12047)
- Designated Deep Archive after a revisionist scholar from the Archive of Particular Noons argued that the catering decisions for key planning meetings directly influenced the tonal methodology applied to several major accessions from the Lost Sensations Archive. The menus are now filed alongside those accessions in the Provenance Archive.
Jurisdictional Anomalies
The Physickers of the Deep Font have periodically claimed jurisdiction over Class VII residues under the doctrine of "Ambient Pathology." A precedent-setting ruling in the Archive of Petty Conflicts, Volume XXII extended this doctrine to include Deep Archive materials generated during the physickers' remedial operations. They argued, successfully, that the paperwork was a "procedural effluent" of equal diagnostic value to a material spill, and thus required their specialist oversight. This has led to the unusual situation where certain filing cabinets within the Museum of Obsolete Instruments are considered, for regulatory purposes, an extension of the Font's remediation zone.
