Archive of Provisional Origins

MS 6894.32 · Guilds, orders and offices

“All origins are provisional until the archive closes; and the archive never closes.”

— Kael, concluding address to the Third Synod on Provenance, Year of the Archive 1142
Inscription above the entrance to the Aperture Theta-7 reading room.

The Archive of Provisional Origins is a conceptual repository and administrative division housed primarily on Floor 88 (the Archive of Provisional Conclusions), with satellite annexes on Floors 47, 112, and the interstitial Vestibule of Provisional Tenancy. Its mandate, as defined in Concordance 17, Clause 8, is to “collect, preserve, and provisionally authenticate the antecedent conditions, causal premises, and foundational justifications for all holdings whose existence precedes formal cataloguing.” In practice, it serves as the Tower’s central clearinghouse for the “why” of a thing, as distinct from the “what” catalogued elsewhere.

Function and Scope

The Archive does not hold physical objects or primary documents. Instead, it curates derivations: annotated chains of logic, witness testimonies regarding inception, comparative analyses of conflicting origin stories, and the administrative paperwork generated by the act of assigning an origin. A typical file might contain the Form OVC-22a: Petition for Origin Designation, counter-petitions from rival Registrar factions, spectrographic analyses of conceptual residue, and the ultimately provisional ruling issued by the Archive’s own adjudicators.

Its most cited contribution is the maintenance of the Provenance Lattice, a multi-dimensional index that attempts to map the causal relationships between the origins of various holdings. For example, the Lattice formally links the disputed origin of the Whispering Stacks to seventeen separate origin-points for unusual acoustics within the Tower, while simultaneously marking all seventeen as “under review.”

Administrative Status

The Archive operates under a unique dual authority. Its day-to-day operations and staffing fall under the purview of the Department of Provenance. However, its foundational protocols and the ultimate arbitration of particularly contentious origins are governed by the Office of Voluntary Correspondence, a relationship formalized in the now-obscure Third Concordance, Annex Delta. This has led to periodic jurisdictional disputes, most notably during the Schism of 1107, when the Department attempted to reclassify all “provisional” origins as “definitively unknown.” The Office’s counter-motion, citing the philosophical necessity of the provisional category, was upheld by the Keeper, and the Archive’s status was reaffirmed.

The Purpose Debate

The Archive is the epicenter of the long-running scholarly dispute known as The Purpose Debate. The debate was formally ignited when the scholar Kael argued that the Archive’s own definition conflated its function (collecting origins) with its purpose (which must, by the Tower’s own logic, itself have a provisional origin). If the Archive’s purpose is to catalog origins, what is the origin of that purpose? The Archive’s official position, documented in its internal Circular 88-Alpha, is that its purpose is “derived from the inherent need for order within any bounded system, as per the precepts suggested in Concordance Zero: The Pre-Origins.” Critics, often affiliated with the Counter Cataloguers, argue this is a tautology housed in a Plexocentric shell.

Notable Holdings

While the Archive’s holdings are entirely meta-documentary, several are frequently referenced:

  • The First Cause Dossier: A collection of 4,822 contradictory accounts of the Tower’s own foundation. The dossier is sealed by order of the Central Archive, but its table of contents is publicly available and serves as a common primer for novice archivists.
  • Registry of Self-Referential Origins: A special sub-section dedicated to artifacts, concepts, and administrative bodies whose claimed origin involves their own future existence. The Archive of Provisional Methods is listed here, with a cross-reference to the Archive of Provisional Holdings.
  • The Vault of Ambiguous Provenance Ledger: A real-time log of submissions to the Vault of Ambiguous Provenance, annotated with the Archive’s preliminary (and always provisional) assessment of each item’s likely point of inception.

Physical Manifestation

The primary reading room on Floor 88 is Aperture Theta-7, a spherical chamber whose walls are lined with unlabeled, flush drawers. A document is retrieved by submitting a Form ORG-5 to a clerk, who then consults an internal, non-public index. The document is delivered not as a file, but as a recitation by one of the Archive’s trained Narrators of Genesis, who perform the origin story from memory, including all footnotes and conflicting appendices. This practice, established in Year of the Archive 1142, is intended to emphasize the fluid and performative nature of origin itself. Researchers often visit the satellite annexe on Floor 112 to consult the “silent stacks,” where written copies are kept under low humidity, though these are considered secondary, derivative records.

The Archive of Provisional Origins stands as a testament to the Tower’s central epistemological stance: that the beginning of a thing is not a fixed point, but a continuing administrative process. As Concordance 17 famously states in its preamble, “To archive an origin is not to pin it down, but to enter into correspondence with its possibility.” The Archive is that correspondence, filed in triplicate, under eternal review.
