Vault of Ambiguous Provenance
MS 9336.70 · Places and structures
“For the purpose of recording provenance, an object may be considered to have originated from any location from which its arrival cannot be definitively disproven.”
— Provenance of Holdings, Annex II, Clause 7.a
The Vault of Ambiguous Provenance is a specialized repository located on Floor 312 (the Cross-Referenced Halls). It serves as the primary holding facility for objects, documents, and conceptual artifacts whose point of origin cannot be definitively established, or for which multiple, mutually exclusive provenances have been formally claimed and cannot be reconciled under the Edict of Singular Provenance. Its administration is shared between the Office of Provenance and the Department of Ambiguous Metrics.
Function and Mandate
The Vault’s primary function is to suspend the ordinary cataloguing process for items with contested or indeterminate origins. By accepting such items into its custody, it prevents them from entering the main stacks with incomplete or contradictory Provenance Index entries, which would violate several core Concordances. Items are held in the Vault pending investigation, arbitration, or the issuance of a provisional provenance tag by a certified Provenance Master. The Vault’s mandate is derived from the Seventh Concordance, which states that “an object of uncertain origin shall be held apart until its history clarifies or is deemed permanently opaque.”
Notable Holdings
The Vault’s inventory is dynamic, but several holdings have achieved a degree of institutional fame due to the complexity or duration of their ambiguity.
- The Loomis Tome: A bound volume of astronomical charts that claims on its colophon to have been printed in “the upper workshops” of the Tower. No floor matching the described layout or workshop registry has been identified. Three separate expeditions have returned with plausible, yet geographically impossible, maps of its supposed point of origin.
- Seventeen Identical Spoons: A set of sterling silver spoons, each bearing a different maker’s mark from a different, documented silversmith’s guild within the Tower. Metallurgical analysis confirms they are from the same ingot and were cast simultaneously. All seventeen guilds claim exclusive provenance.
- The Whispering Atlas: A map that alters its depicted corridors and stairwells to match the immediate surroundings of whoever opens it. Its provenance is listed, in shifting ink, as “here.”
Administrative Protocols
Access to the Vault is restricted to personnel bearing dual authorization from the Office of Provenance and either the Department of Ambiguous Metrics or the Bureau of Ambiguous Real Estate. Items are logged using Form 88-C, which includes fields for all claimed provenances, the name of the submitting agent, and a unique Ambiguity Coefficient calculated using Ambiguous Calipers. Disputes regarding an item’s right to remain in the Vault (versus being released to a claimant or transferred to the Vault of Unfinished Business) are adjudicated by a panel of three Provenance Masters, whose decision can be appealed only to the full Index of Ambiguous Precedents.
The Kael Ruling and Its Aftermath
The modern administrative framework of the Vault was largely shaped by a landmark ruling by Provenance Master Kael in YT 732. Faced with the case of the “Twin Ledgers” (two otherwise identical account books each claiming to be the original), Kael decreed that when provenance cannot be resolved, the object’s potential provenances become its defining characteristic. This led to the formalization of the “Ambiguous Referent” classification for such items. Some scholars, particularly those aligned with the pre-Provenance Schism traditionalists, argue that the Kael Ruling effectively creates ambiguity where none need exist, and that such items should be forcibly assigned a singular provenance by lot. This remains a contentious point in provenance theory.
Relationship to Other Departments
The Vault operates at the intersection of several bureaucratic domains. The Bureau of Ambiguous Transit issues special “In-Vault Transit Permits” for the movement of large or conceptually unstable ambiguous items. The Department of Ambiguous Metrics provides the calibration standards and Ambiguity Coefficients required for official logging. Perhaps most crucially, the Vault maintains a permanent loan agreement with the Vault of Conditional Forms on Floor 299, from which it borrows reference objects of “Canonically Uncertain” status to calibrate its own measurement instruments, ensuring that ambiguity is measured against a consistent standard.
