Provenance of Holdings
MS 5777.75 · Practices and doctrines
Provenance of Holdings refers to the comprehensive system of documentation, verification, and philosophical doctrine governing the origin and chain of custody of any object, concept, or entity catalogued within The Tower. It is distinct from the procedural manual On the Provenance of Holdings and the administrative body, the Office of Provenance, though it serves as their foundational subject matter. The Provenance of a holding is considered its primary ontological credential, without which its placement in the archive is considered provisional at best, and a potential source of narrative contamination at worst.
Philosophical Foundations
The Tower’s epistemology rests on the principle that an item’s reality is contingent upon, and demonstrable by, a verifiable point of entry. A holding without provenance is akin to a book without a shelf mark: it may contain text, but it cannot be said to exist within the archival corpus. This is formally expressed in the Edict of Singular Provenance, which states that "for each holding, there shall be one first moment of archival recognition, and that moment shall be documented." The practical interpretation of "first moment" is the source of frequent adjudication, leading to the establishment of the Panel of Adjudication.
Standard Documentation
The primary instrument for establishing provenance is Form 88-C: Provenance Slip, a triplicate chain-of-custody document. Its completion initiates the tripartite verification process, culminating in the application of the Arrival Sigil (see On the Provenance of Holdings, Clause 12). For holdings that arrive through non-standard means—such as spontaneous manifestation, oneironautic projection, or paradoxical duplication—a supplemental dossier is required, per Annex Gamma of the same document. The Department of Provenance is tasked with the initial validation of these documents before they are entered into the Master Amendment Log.
Protocols for Dispute and Duplication
When the provenance of a holding is contested, or when identical items appear with conflicting points of origin, standard procedure escalates to Protocol 17-B. This protocol involves a comparative analysis of the contested provenance records, often requiring spectral cartography of the holding’s narrative resonance. If no material distinction can be ascertained, the holding is assigned a "Provenance of Collective Emergence" and shelved in a quarantined stack, pending further review by the Inquisitors. A famous test case was the duplicate set of The Miletus Fragment, which led to the drafting of the Protocol for Contradictory Attribution.
The Role of Provenant Authority
The concept of "Provenant Authority" was elaborated in Revision 9.4 of On the Provenance of Holdings (Clause 33, Annex Delta). It defines the individual or office whose attestation is sufficient to establish provenance in the absence of physical documentation. For centuries, this authority rested solely with the position of Provenance Master Kael, though since the Reforms of Spiral 304, it has been a rotating appointment among senior Librarians. Disputes over the legitimate scope of Provenant Authority fill seventeen volumes of the Concordance of Acquisition.
Notable Controversies
A persistent scholarly dispute concerns whether provenance is a property inherent to the holding or a relational attribute bestowed by the act of cataloguing. The Traditionalist School, citing early Concordances, argues that a holding’s provenance is its "narrative seed" and exists prior to archival intervention. The Proceduralist School, dominant since the last century, contends that provenance is a bureaucratic construct, a necessary fiction generated by Form 88-C to make the inherently anomalous legible to the filing system. This debate remains unresolved, though it has little impact on day-to-day operations.
A more practical controversy involves the status of holdings crafted from Phantom Vellum. As the vellum itself has no fixed origin, being harvested from the margins between floors, the provenance of any document written upon it becomes recursively unstable. A special sub-committee of the Office of Provenance meets biannually on Floor 306 to review these cases, often issuing temporary provenance waivers that must be renewed each fiscal spiral.
Provenance and the Nature of the Tower
Some meta-archivists posit that the meticulous recording of provenance is not merely an administrative function but a fundamental mechanism of the Tower’s own existence. They suggest that by documenting where things come from, the Tower generates the necessary causal substrate to support their continued reality within its walls. In this view, the Office of Provenance is not just a record-keeping bureau but a vital organ of the Tower’s metaphysical physiology. This theory, while compelling, remains speculative, as its own provenance is notoriously difficult to trace.
