Vault of Ambiguous Records

MS 9999.39 · Places and structures

Any record whose chain of custody includes a phase of indeterminate attribution, disputed classification, or ambiguous authorship shall be deemed to possess ambiguous record status and be transferred accordingly.

The Vault of Ambiguous Records is a specialized archival facility located on Floor 312 within the administrative zone commonly referred to as the Cross-Referenced Halls. It operates under a shared mandate from the Department of Ambiguous Metrics and the Office of Provenance, serving as the terminus for documents and artifacts whose fundamental nature as a "record" is itself subject to formal dispute. Unlike the Vault of Ambiguous Provenance, which concerns itself with origins, or the Vault of Unfinished Business, which concerns incompletion, this Vault’s purview is the ontological ambiguity of recordhood. It is the final repository for items that may or may not be records at all.

Governance and Mandate

The Vault’s operations are detailed in Concordance Addendum 404-β, which establishes the criteria for transfer. An object or document becomes a candidate for the Vault when two or more certified Librarians file a Form 88-C: Provenance Slip with conflicting mandatory tick-box selections under the category "Record Status." The most common points of contention are whether an item constitutes a deliberate recording of information, an accidental byproduct of a process, or a prospective placeholder for information not yet extant.

Day-to-day administration follows the Protocols for the Calibration of Ambiguous Calipers, adapted for documentary analysis. The Vault maintains a permanent loan agreement with the Vault of Conditional Forms on Floor 299, from which it draws its supply of "Canonically Uncertain" reference documents used to calibrate the judgment of reviewing clerks.

Notable Holdings

The Vault’s collection is, by definition, unstable. A definitive inventory is considered impossible, as the act of inventorying would itself constitute the creation of a new, unambiguous record about the holdings. However, several notable categories are acknowledged in the secondary literature:

  • The Ledger of Half-Heard Conversations: A bound folio purportedly containing transcriptions of murmurs overheard in distant stairwells. Its status is disputed: it may be a genuine record of actual speech, a poetic exercise, or simply a ledger repurposed for another use, with the writing being marginalia unrelated to conversation.
  • Carton 7x-Ω (The Whispering Vellum): A collection of treated skins that emit a faint, rustling sound when undisturbed. Some archivists argue the acoustic emission is the record; others contend the vellum is merely the medium, and the true record—the content of the whisper—is irrecoverable and thus nonexistent.
  • The Axiomatic Penumbra: Not a physical object, but a designated volume of air in Sub-Aisle 12 where light falls in a particular pattern at a specific hour. It was transferred following a 40-year dispute over whether a shadow cast by a non-catalogued urn constituted a "record" of the urn’s shape and the sun’s position.

Procedural Challenges

The primary operational challenge is the principle of Permissible Incompleteness. A record within the Vault cannot be fully described, as a complete description would resolve its ambiguity and necessitate its transfer out. Consequently, cataloguing employs a system of nested negations and conditional sub-clauses. A typical entry in the Index of Ambiguous Precedents (the adjacent index used for cross-referencing) might read: "Item 4491-B: Not not a logbook, nor exclusively a sketchpad; possibly a palimpsest, but the underlying text may itself be a record of a previous ambiguity."

Disputes over classification are settled by reference to the Vault of Primary Measures, which holds the definitive copy of the calibration protocols, and by appeals to the Third Concordance, which formally records the location of precedent archives.

The Reflexive Annex

Annex 1 of the Vault, known as the Reflexive Annex, houses the Vault’s own administrative paperwork. This includes procurement orders for shelving (which may or may not be records of future storage capacity), minutes from staff meetings (whose status as a record of discussion is complicated by the frequent use of intentionally ambiguous phrasing), and the Log of Self-Reference, which records all entry and egress to the Annex. The Log itself is stored within the Annex, leading to a perpetual procedural debate on whether an entry describing a clerk entering to update the Log is a valid record or a tautological artifact.

Scholarly Disagreement

The principal doctrinal conflict concerns the endpoint of ambiguity. The Department of Ambiguous Metrics holds that ambiguity is a quantifiable and permanent state, and thus items in the Vault are in their final, correct repository. A minority school of thought, often associated with clerks from the Bureau of Ambiguous Transit, argues that "ambiguous record" is merely a transient taxonomic category. They posit that all items within the Vault are, in fact, en route to other, more definitive vaults—such as the Vault of Immutables or the Vault of Temporary Resolutions—and that the Vault of Ambiguous Records is functionally a sorting hub whose sorting algorithms have been paused indefinitely. This view is controversial, as it implicitly challenges the authority of Concordance Addendum 404-β.

Regardless of perspective, the Vault stands as a critical institutional mechanism for managing the epistemological uncertainties inherent in a library dedicated to the nonexistent. It ensures that questions of recordhood, like the records themselves, are filed appropriately and remain open for future, equally ambiguous, review.
